ClayBattelle Cuts Down Lumberjacks
Valley made the trip to Blacksville on Monday night, December 5, hoping for a win over the Cee Bees, but the home team proved to be too much on the night as they won big 86-53 over the Lumberjacks.
The home team placed for players in twin digits, while the visiting Lumberjacks were led by sophomore standout Gavin Derby with a game tying high of 21 points, and Dallas Peak with 13.
Clay Battelle went up 36-30 at the half, thanks to a big 24 point first quarter points. However Valley scored 18 in the first eight minutes and battled back in the second frame to hold the home boys to 12 points while scoring 12 of their own to stay in the game.
In the first half Derby and the Cee Bees Colby Barr who had 21 for the game each had 13 points. The second half was a different story as Valley could only muster up 23 points, while the Cee Bees hit for 50 markers to win going away. Preston Luzander hit for 20 markers for the home team, while Kolton St. Clair added18, including four 3ás, and Matthew Gadd hit 15, including a trio of 3-pointers.
Trevor Stackpole and Landon Jerico each hit for seven points for the Lumberjacks, while Briigs Anderson got three points and Chris Kennedy added a basket for two.
The Cee Bees hit 32 shots from the floor, including seven from behind the arc, and went 15-20 from the free throw line. Valley made 19 from the floor, including nine 3ás and went just 6-20 from the charity stripe.
Valley Boys Defeat Cameron
The Lumberjacks got a big win on Tuesday night, January 6, in Pine Grove, defeating a tough Cameron team 57-43 behind double figure scoring from Gavin Derby 18 points, Patrick Higginbotham 14, and Brigg Andersonás 10. Also scoring for the home team was Dallas Preak with six markers and Trevor Stackpole with three.
Valley went up 18-11 after the first eight minutes, but the Dragons came roaring back in the second quarter 16-9 to tie the game 27-27 at the half. The Lumberjacks won quarter three 16-14 to take a two point lead, before tightening up the defense in the fourth quarter, while out scoring the visitors 14-2 to get the 14 point win.
The first quarter was a lesson to the Dragons on long distance shooting as Coach John Kocherás squad knocked down five 3-pointers in the frame. Cameron led by Cole Burgett with 15 team high points hung tough as they hit three 3ás of their own in the first eight minutes. Mason Debolt ended with 14 points, including four 3ás. While Colton Winters added six.
Valley hit 21 shots from the floor, including six 3-pointers and went 9-12 from the free throw line. Cameron made 17 field goals, including seven 3ás and went just 2-4 from the free throw line.
Lumberjacks Get O.T. Win Over Calhoun County
Visiting Valley high school upped their record to 7-3 on the season with a 68-66 overtime victory over Calhoun County on January 10, on the Red Devils floor. The Lumberjacks and Red Devils played to an 11-11 tie after the first quarter and at the half the visitors led 28-25. The Lumberjacks upped the lead to five points by the end of three 43-38, however the Red Devils rallied in the fourth to force overtime by outsourcing the visitors 16-11 for a 54-54 regulation score. In the five minute overtime period it was back and forth with the Lumberjacks finally winning the game with a 14-12 advantage in the extra period.
Valley’s sophomore sensation was knocked in 11 points in the O.T giving him 31 on the night to win game scoring honors as well. He hit a pair of 3-pointers in the contest and went 11-13 from the free throw line, which proved to be the difference. He had ample support from Dallas Preat with 17 points, including 10 in the second period, he also canned two big free throws in the overtime period. Trevor Stackpole came up big with 11 points, including a 3-pointer. Brigg Anderson tossed in five points, while Patrick Stackpole and Chris Kennedy each added a basket, and Landon Jerico added a free throw.
Calhoun County had four players hit double digits with Landon Bennett leading the way with 18 points, including a trio of 3ás. Levi Morgan knocked in 15 points, including a three, while Owen Taylor hit for 13 and Joel Bassett added 12.
Valley hit 24 shots from the floor including four 3-pointers and went 16-20 from the free throw line. Calhoun hit 24 field goals and made seven 3ás and went 7-10 from the charity stripe. The loss dropped Calhoun Cpunty to 2-7 on the season.
Cameron Gets Revenge Win Over Valley
Valley high school boys traveled to Cameron on Friday night for a rematch against the Dragons they defeated a week before on the Lumberjacks floor. This time the Dragons were breathing fire as they cut down the Lumberjacks by 33 points 82-49 to get revenge.
The first quarter looked like it would be a good game as Cameron held a two point lead after eight minutes 18-16. However the home team then turned it up a notch and outscored the visitors 26-11 in the second frame to take a 44-22 lead at the break, with Cole Burkett knocking in 14 of his game high 24 points in the first half, and Lance Hartley hitting 11 of his 23 markers before the break.
The third period would also belong to the Dragons as they increased their lead to 28 points winning the quarter 21-15 as Hartley and Burkett each hit for six in the period. Valley received 11 of his team high 21 points from sophomore standout Gavin Derby but it wasnát enough as the depth of the Dragons who had 10 players dent the scoreboard also took the fourth quarter 17-12 to get the win.
Helping Derby out was Briggs Anderson with 11 points, followed by Chris Kennedy with eight, Landen Jerico with five and Trevor Stackpole with four. For the Dragons Colton Winters also hit double figures with 10 markers, while Coleston Wichterman and Scott each added six.
Overall the Dragons hit 30 shots from the floor, including five 3-pointers and went 17-26 from the free throw line. Valley hit 19 field goals, including three 3-pointers and went 8-15 from the charity stripe. The loss dropped Valley to 7-4 on the season while Cameron moved to 7-3 with the win.
