River Girls Rout Shadyside
The Lady Pilots went full steam ahead on Monday night, December 9, in Shadyside as they improved their season record to 13-1 with an easy 71-31 victory over the Tigers.
River used a pressure defense and hot shooting from its guards to over power the home team from beginning to end. The Pilots took control early, gaining a 16-6 first quarter lead and increased the margin to 36-11 at the half with a 20-5 second quarter.
River got 23 points each from senior guard Hannah Raper and junior guard Kelsey Harlan as they crusied to the win. When not scoring both players were also working the press to perfection helping the Lady Pilots force the Tiger into 26 turnovers leading to several easy Pilot baskets.
Besides scoring 23 points, Harlan also added six steals and seven assists. River built on its lead in the third quarter with a 23-12 advantage to go up 59-23 heading into the final eight minutes. Using nearly every player on the bench the high flying Pilots won quarter four 12-8 for the final score. Raper ended with three steals four assists and a trio of 3-pointers to end her night.
“Hannah and Kelsey have really matured as players and are at the point where they basically know what each other is going to do,” River head coach Rick Isaly said. “they’re able to get each other the ball in spots where they’re able to score.”
The Pilots had nine players add to the score book. Tessa Primmpumped in eight markers, Riley Knight Reese Hobbs and Zoey Fox all added four points, while Emma Reed added two and Ava Wohnhas hit a free throw.
Leading the way for Shadyside was Gentry Brown who knocked in 17 points and gathered in six rebounds.
River girls sink Bellaire
River traveled up stream to take on a good Bellaire squad on Saturday, January 14, and came back home with their 14th win on the campaign.
River got off to a slow start and by midway through the game found themselves trailing 23-18. However through shear hustle and determination theymade their worked their way back and came home with 52-40 victory.
The Pilots had a hard time on both ends of the floor as they found themselves struggling to make easy shots and allowing the Big Reds to get to the bucket.
In the second half the Pilots took to guard Kelsey Harlan for answers and she responded with a game high 28 points. Harlan ran the offense from her point guard position and played tough defense to nd with six assists and four steals to go along with her scoring.
She wasnát the only one scoring though she fought through screens and dished off to Hannah Raper and Zoey Fox who got good looks and scored in the comeback. Fox ended with 11 markers, including seven in the crucial second half. River was playing most of the second half with out post player Rylee Knight who found herself in foul trouble and had to set. Also Tessa Primm starter was playing sparingly due to an injury.
Bellaire was led by Harveth who scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. She was aided by junior Allie Ault just missed double figures, totaling nine points. River plays host to Shadyside on tomorrow night at home looking for their 15th win.
