Hundred wins thriller over Paden City

The Hornets came into Paden City on Monday night, January 9, riding a seven game winning streak and sporting 9-1 record, while the Wildcats were at 1-9 and had lost eight straight. The last time they met was in early December and Hundred claimed a 21 point victory. However this time was different as the Wildcats took an early lead and led most of the way before falling 44-42.

Paden City took a lead with 19 seconds remaining on an off-balance shot from the lane by the games leading scorer senior McKenzie Thomas who finished with 18 points, including a pair of 3ás. However, the Hornets Roxie Huggins who ended with 15 points, canned a 12 foot jumper with 12 seconds left to give the Hornets a one point lead 43-42. Paden City then turned the ball over and fouled junior guard Ashlyn Peters who sank 1-2 free throws with four seconds left. Thomas got off a shot just inside the halfcourt line for the Wildcats, but it fell off the mark and time expired giving the Hornets a 10-1 record and their eighth straight win.

Peters ended with 13 points for Hundred and was credited with six assists. Summer Morris just missed a double-double as she added nine points and hauled in 11 rebounds. Leah Dean with seven points, including a big basket in the fourth quarter to tie the game, showed eight rebounds on the night.

Thomas also had three steals for the Wildcats and six rebounds. Backing her was Kim Bush who finished the night with 10 points and six rebounds, plus three steals. Aston Wade and Jocelyn Sawinski each had four points, while Lexi Mathis and Mallory Dennis both added three points. âWe finally played like a team, need to clean up our defense but we are getting better on the offensive side,ã said Coach Josh Fulks

Hundred hit 13 shots from the floor including a three pointer, and went 17-32 from the free throw line. Paden City hit 17 field goals including two 3ás and went just 6-14 free throws.

Hundred drops close one to Geibel Catholic

The Hornets made a game of it on Wednesday night in Hundred at the Hornets Nest despite losing junior pivot and team leader Roxie Huggins to an injury in the second quarter, and fighting off an amazing 42 point explosion from Geibel freshman guard Emma Larkin. When all was said and done the Hornets eight game winning streak was broken as they fell by three 49-46

The first quarter had the home team on top 14-13 led by seven points from Huggins. In the second period Huggins hit four free throws before leaving with the injury, however junior guard/forward Summer Morris picked up the slack and canned six points, while Ashlyn Peters hit her second 3-pointer of the half. Leah Dean added a basket in the frame giving her six points for the half. The visitors got a great first half from Larkin who hit for 26 of the teams 30 points.

Geibel Catholic got 10 points in the third period all from Larkin, while the Hornets stayed close with Peters hitting another from beyond the arc and Morris and Arconna Zarco each adding a basket. Heading into the final eight minutes the Hornets were down by four 40-36. Morris hit three big shots in the fourth to give her a team high 14 points on the night, and Dean hit the other four in the quarter.
