Wetzel County Schools Hold Virtual Family Math Nights

Wetzel County Schools would like to thank all the families who participated and made our first Virtual Family Math Night a success! It is great seeing families doing math together and having a great time while doing it!!

All k-5 students in the county had opportunity and materials to participate. All four elementary schools held their event on different nights. Long Drain held their’s on April 20, Shortline April 22, Paden City April 27, and New Martinsville May 6.

There were 5 different activities students could participate in:1. Origami (cat, crab and frog) 2. Board games (parents vs. students). 3. Scavenger hunt. 4. “What do you notice?” activity. 5. Estimation activity (how many candies in a jar)

The student who guessed the closest to their correct number of candies in the jar at each school won a $10 Subway gift card.

The event was open to families for two weeks following the school activity night in case students and families were not available that night for the event.

Family math night was a huge success with total participation include: 397 attendees including students, family members, and school staff.

There were 134 student estimations on the candy jar, 120 origami photos taken and posted, 97 What do you notice? posts, 227 board games played between parents and students, 142 scavenger hunt 5 in a row.

Levels of difficulty were based on student grade levels: Beginner activities – Grade K-1, Intermediate activities – Grade 2-3, Advanced activities – Grade 4-5.
