Local CWA Workers Strike
Despite months of negotiations, members of the Communications Workers of America and Frontier Communications were unable to reach a contract agreement. On March 3 at midnight, the existing contract between the two expired, resulting in 1,400 Frontier employees in West Virginia and Ashburn, Virginia striking for an agreement they believe would be fair to all.
Frontier activated its strike contingency plan in West Virginia. The company said it is working to minimize disruptions to customer service caused by the work stoppage.
Frontier said it will continue to provide the company’s West Virginia customers with quality customer service, and the goal is to reach an agreement that will continue to provide very generous wages and benefits to employees while providing outstanding customer service.
“Our objective in these negotiations has been to preserve good jobs with competitive wages and excellent benefits while addressing the needs of our ever-changing business. However, no talks are scheduled at this time,” Frontier Communications’ Andy Malinoski commented.
CWA District 2-13 Vice President Ed Mooney said, via news release, that it’s time for Frontier to start investing in maintaining and rebuilding its network in West Virginia.
“We have been very clear throughout the bargaining process that our top priority is keeping good jobs in our communities,” said Ed Mooney.
“Going on strike is never easy. It’s a hardship for our members and the customers who we are proud to serve. But the job cuts at Frontier have gone too far – we know it and Frontier’s customers know it.”
Malinoski said Frontier Communications has “worked in partnership with CWA workers and improved more than 165,000 homes and businesses to bring them up to FCC regulations for the Connect America Fund in the last three years. More than $500 million in network improvements have been made since Frontier has been in West Virginia.”
“Together, we’ve made major improvements in the network. Everything is a balance. We want to continue providing good wages and benefits to our employees and providing excellent customer service, while at the same time addressing the needs of our ever-changing business,” Malinoski remarked.
