Wetzel County Prosecutor Tim Haught Releases 2022 Report

The Wetzel County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office was responsible for handling the following cases filed in Circuit Court in 2022.

55 Child Abuse and Neglect cases; 13 Juvenile Delinquency cases; 69 Mental Hygiene cases; 100 Felony Bound Over cases; 72 Felony Cases presented by indictment or information; 3 Misdemeanor cases; 17 Fugitive from Justice cases (Extraditions to other states)

The Wetzel County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office was responsible for handling the following cases in Magistrate Court in 2022.

619 Traffic Offenses; 12 DNR Offenses; 387 other Misdemeanor Offenses

Total Magistrate Court Offenses: 1018 offenses filed in 794 cases.

There were a total of 227 Felony Offenses contained within 158 cases filed in Magistrate Court.

The Victim’s Advocate assisted 373 victims of crime. The Prosecuting Attorney’s Office in connection with its Victim’s Advocate collected thousands of dollars in restitution and provided transportation, arranged for counseling, and assisted victims in obtaining other services available to them.

The annual regional jail bill to Wetzel County was $278,161.25. In general that represents incarcerations for misdemeanor offenses and represents approximately 6000 “inmate days.” Felony offenses which result in convictions are not chargeable to Wetzel County but to the WVDRC.

16 cases from Wetzel County were Prosecuted Federally. Those cases were on guns, drugs, child exploitation, and fraud.

The Wetzel County Prosecutor’s Office seized and forfeited to law enforcement over $6000.00 in cash and a number of firearms and other property used in connection with drug trafficking.

Wetzel County is a member of the Marshall County Drug Task Force a federally funded initiative. The Task Force initiated 59 investigations involving Wetzel County in 2022. Timothy E. Haught sits on that task force. Timothy E. Haught also sits on the Anti-Terrorism Advisory Committee for the Northern District of West Virginia and cooperates with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in referring all cases with a federal nexus for prosecution.

Timothy E. Haught is also Vice Chair of the West Virginia Prosecuting Attorneyás Institute which appoints special prosecutors and trains and educates prosecutors and law enforcement. He has been appointed as a special prosecutor in various counties across West Virginia and has instructed prosecutors and law enforcement on a variety of topics.

The Wetzel County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office consists of 2 full time Prosecutors, Timothy E. Haught, the elected Prosecutor, and Justin Craft, Chief Assistant Prosecutor. There is one part-time Assistant Prosecutor, Carolyn Flannery who handles only juvenile and child abuse and neglect cases.

The Prosecuting Attorney’s Office also provides advice to the Wetzel County Commission and other County Offices and Agencies, reviews all audits, handles all tax appeals, exonerations and various other civil matters for Wetzel County.
