River Girls Cross Country Finding Success

River girls cross country team had a strong showing at the Belpre Invitational this past Saturday, September 17. This was the biggest meet and most competitive field they’ve faced this year. Out of 150 runners, Mara Beard earned a medal by placing 16th, Camryn Caldweel came in 63rd overall. Mallory Brake had a strong showing in the Junior High race placing 11th out of 105 runners in a personal best of 13:50.

River Cross Country team traveled to the Belmont County Championships on Wednesday, September 15 and came away with more hardware as Mallory Brake won first place in the junior high race with a time of 13:56. Mara Beard won the girls high school race in 20:51 and Camryn Caldwell placed seventh in 22:22. All three walked away with trophies. The next meet for the girls was on Saturday, September 18, at the highly competitive Belpre Invitational.

On Saturday, September 11, the Pilots ran in the Watkins Memorial (McGowan Invitational) and performed as expected again with Mallory Brake coming in 16th out of 125 in the JV race and winning a metal.

In the high school division Mara Beard came in third in a time of 20:53 out of 125 runners. Camryn Caldwell finished 10th respectively with a time of 22:22. Both girls received metals for their performance. “I couldn’t be any more prouder of them. They set their goals, stuck to them, and did what they wanted to do today,” said coach Shreve.

The Pilots have a scheduled meet today at Belmont County and will be running again on Saturday against Belpre.

River Girls have busy week in cross country. Traveling to Shenandoah high school on Tuesday, September 7, the girls made their presence felt as the two teams combined the boys and girls together, Running in the JV race for River was Mallory Brake who came in as the first girl finisher in the race and third overall among girls and boys. In the High school race Mara Beard was the first girl finisher and came in third among boys and girls as they ran together. Camryn Caldwell finished as the second girl finisher right behind Beard and was the sixth place finisher overall among boys and girls.

“There were just the two schools so we combined it all into one race. Our girls did very well winning firts and second and first in JV. Times are always a little slower over there, but we are happy with our performance,” said coach Shreve.
