Lumberjacks Drop Opener to Tygarts Valley

Valley High School made the long trip to Mill Creek on Friday, August 27, in hopes of starting the 2021 season out on a winning note. However the Bulldogs of Tygarts Valley had other ideas and cut the Lumberjacks down to the tune of 49-0.

Dispite the diasappointing loss the Lumberjacks had some moments to build on and will be fired up this Friday when they travel to Calhoun County for game two of the season.

Tygarts Valley was sharp in their season opener as they jumped out to a 15-0 hallftime lead before pouring it on in the second half for the win.

Luke Bright and Garrett Gibson each scored three touchdowns for the Bulldogs with Bright finishing the night going 11-18 passing for 135 yards and three T.D.’s, with two going to Gibson. Gibson was on his game as he caught eight passes for 109 yards while also tacking on a T.D. when he intercepted a pass and took it 80 yards to the house.

The first score of the game came on a Lumberjack turnover when a bad snap resulted in a safety on the first series of play for the visitors. Valley QB Gavin Derby was looking for a pass play but the ball went over his head and the home team went up 2-0The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0.

From there Tygarts Valley took the punt and scored on a seven play 40 yard drive with Walker George gaining 11 yards for the score to make it 8-0 with 9:14 left in the second quarter.

The Lumberjacks couldn’t get much offense flowing and had to punt giving Tygarts Valley another shot before the half ended. The Bulldogs took advantage by moving downfield on a 61 yard drive and plunging across from the one yard line to go into the break with a 15-0 lead.

Valley-Wetzel had 61 yards in the first half but couldn’t dent the scoreboard. Tygarts Valley opened the second half with a score on a 16 yard scoring pass for a 21-0 lead and then increased in to 29-0 in the third on a nice 17 yard run by Hulver.

With the Lumberjacks going three and out the home team added two more scores in the third quarter with Gibson hauling in a 10 yard pass to make it 36-0 and then grabbing another 19 yard T.D. pass with 16 seconds to play in the third making it 43-0.

The home teams finished the scoring for the night with 7:48 left to play in the game when Gibson intercepted Derby’s pass and returned it 80 yards to paydirt.

The Bulldogs (1-0) outgained the visitors 349 to 85 in total yards for the contest. Hulver had a strong showing out of the Tygarts Valley backfield, leading the team in rushing with 105 yards on 13 carries. George followed with 77 yards on four attempts.

Derby completed 7 of 14 passes for 48 yards for the Lumberjacks. Lane Dallison led the visitors on the ground with 40 yards on 14 carries.

Valley-Wetzel will return to action next Friday when it visits Calhoun County.

Tygarts Valley will be on the road the same evening when it travels to Parsons to battle rival Tucker County at 7 p.m.
