Let’s Play Ball! Opening Day at Nathan Hassig Sports Complex

By Rick Loy - Staff Writer | May 5, 2021

Opening Day at Nathan Hassig Fields

The New Martinsville Junior Baseball/Softball, Inc. held its opening day festivities Saturday May 1, 2021 at the new Nathan Hassig Sports Complex (formerly Cass Fields). Due to Covid issues in our county the Board Members of the league decided not to have the yearly opening day parade but instead have all teams show up at the fields at 9 a.m. with each team having a particular spot to social distance for the opening ceremonies.

DJ Josh Weekley was the emcee for the opening day ceremony, playing a variety of songs for the youngsters and parents to enjoy.

It was a really nice day weather wise for some good baseball to be played with the first games getting underway at 11 a.m. and running throughout the entire day. The park had many spectators on hand to support the young ball players.

NMJBS, Inc. had great food and drinks at the newly painted and remodeled concession stand for the players and fans to enjoy. Also, Kona Ice had a truck onsite serving shaved ice treats, which was a big hit for the youngsters to enjoy.

Kudos go out to Mascaro & Sons for leasing the land and the generous donation to make the Nathan Hassig Sports Complex a reality with five beautiful fields to serve our community youth, and to all the volunteers, board members, the many donors (Wetzel County Commission, BP, Bridgeport Tool & Equipment, and many more), coaches, and parents for supporting the area youth.

NMJBS Inc., President Josh Loy said it is an overwhelming feeling seeing the Complex come together with the many hours from so many volunteers and the donations from many businesses, organizations, Mr. Mascaro, Wetzel County Commission, and so many others to make it all possible. Mr. Loy thanks everyone involved in making the Nathan Hassig Complex a reality.
