Madonna Comeback Takes Down Blue Eagles Boys
Homestanding Magnolia let one slip away on Thursday night in New Martinsville as the Blue Eagles lost an 18 point lead in the first quarter to fall 66-56 to visiting Weirton Madonna. The home team came out hot and scoring 24 first quarter points while limiting the Blue Dons to nine with a good defensive effort.
However the visitors came back strong in the secon period to outscore the hosts 21-9 heading into the locker room down just one.
Magnolia came out for the second half fired up and took a six point lead mid-way through the period but it was short lived as the visitors quickly scored nine straight to go up three and from there it was back and forth.
With 1:32 second to play the home team couldn’t get one to fal and Madonna hit free throws and a couple baskets to pick up the win.
Fresman Kaden Johnson hit for a team high 14 points including three 3’s, while Tevor Williamson finished with 11 markers. Hayden Pyles added 10 points, Levi Cecil pitched in nine and Chase Glover hit two 3’s and a free throw for seven.
Leading the way for Madonna was Lucky Pulice with a game high 19, followed by teammate Evan Bone with 17.
Magnolia Falls Short at St. Marys
The visiting Blue Eagles got 25 points from senior pivot Gavin Postelthwait on Monday March 29, at St. Marys, but it wasn’t enough as the fourth ranked Blue Devils turned to guard Grant Barnhart for a game high 31 points to get the win 57-44.
Magnolia entered the contest right behind St. Marys as the fifth ranked team in WV Class AA, but lost the battle in the second quarter when the home team outscored the Blue Eagles 17-7 to take a 13 point lead at the break. The second half was back and forth with each team scoring 25 points. With five minutes to play in the fourth quarter and St. Marys holding a 12 point lead, Magnolia’s Chase Glover connected on a three point shot to start a mini run, but the Blue Devils answered right back with a conventional three point play from Barnhart.
The Blue Eagles got two baskets down low from Postlethwait, however each time the home boys answered back to eventually run out the clock.
Adding to the Magnolia scoring was freshman Hayden Pyles with eight points, while Glover and Kaden Johnson each contributed four points respectively. Junior Trevor Williamson hit a three ball to round out the scoring for the Eagles.
While Barnhart connected on 11-13 free throws and four 3’s as part of his 31 points, he was aided by Ben Long with nine, Luke Webb with eight and Brandon Lawhon with seven. The Blue Devils hit 15-19 from the foul line while Magnolia made good on 3-8. Magnolia hit 18 field goals to 17 for St. Marys.
