Eagles Crush Lumberjacks
It was only fitting that on the day he signed with Penn State Fayette Magnolia senior Big Man Gavin Postlethwait would have a big game with 23 points. As he lead four Blue Eagles in double figures in a game that was really never in doubt as they welcomed the Valley Lumberjacks to Magnolia on Saturday April 10th. And sent them home with a 78-36 loss.
After LumberJack Gavin Streets hit a three to start the game it was all Magnolia. The Eagles would see five different players in Postlethwait, Trevor Williamson, Kaden Johson, Levi Cecil and Hayden Pyles all drill threes in the first quarter. The Eagles led 26-3 after one with Postlewait having eight in the opening quarter. Magnolia continued to dominate in the second quarter as they outscored the visitors 22-10 and to lead 48-13 at the half. In the second it would be Williamson leading the way with eight while Streets led Valley with six.
The Jacks got buckets early in the third from Logan Bassett and Walker Bassett to make the score 50-17, but the Eagles would end the quarter on a 20-0 run and go up 70-17, highlighted by a huge slam dunk by Postlethwait off a nice assist from Williamson. Pyles lead the way for the Eagles in the third with nine.
The fourth quarter saw both teams empty their bench and the Jacks with a 19-8 advantage would make the finale score 78-36 Eagles.
Streets had eight in the final quarter to lead the way for the Jacks. While Junior Drew Clegg scored a three ball late in the game.
Scoring for the Eagles: Postlethwait had 23, Williamson had 17, Johnson had 14 and Pyles had 12. While Cecil had five, Clegg had three, Brayden Vargo had two and Copper Poe and Brady Kocher both had one each. For the Jacks, Streets lead the way with 17, followed by Tommy Shannon with seven, Walker Bassett had five, and Triston Bates had three. Brigg Anderson and Logan Bassett both added two each.
St. Marys Upends Cold Shooting
Just three days after getting a big win over John Marshall on the road, Magnolia played host to the Blue Devils of St. Marys in what was expected to be a back and forth battle. The Blue Eagles lost to the visitors on the road a couple weeks ago and were looking for revenge on the home floor.
However things didn’t go as planned and the visitors took advantage of ice cold shooting from the home team to get an easy 49-34 win. Magnolia had just 22 points after three periods while St. Marys behind the hot shooting Grant Barnhart (game high 29 points) had poured in 38. The Blue Eagles won the battle in the fourth quarter 12-11, but it was too little too late.
Barnharts 29 points led all scorers, but he was the only consistent player for the visitors. Magnolia was led by Gavin Postlethwait with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Trevor Willianson hit for 11 markers including three 3-pointers. Hayden Pyles added five points including a three and Chase Glover connected on a long ball for three and hit 1-2 free throws to round out the scoring.
