High School Sports Finally Makes A Return

By Ed Parsons - Editor | Mar 3, 2021

The excitement is about to start. After a year of waiting and inactivity, the high school sports scene is in the spotlight. Boys and Girls basketball kicks off this week with several games on tap. It looks like the big game of the week will be at Magnolia High School where the Blue Eagles Boys team takes on Williamstown in what could be a donnybrook. Both teams have several players back from last season, but I give Magnolia the edge with a strong inside game and superior shooting.

The Silver Knights Boys open up on Monday, as they travel down river to St. Marys in what could be another dandy. The Silver Knights have 24 players including freshmen out this year, but the Blue Devils will be a hand full especially on the home court.

Paden City Boys and Girls both play at home on Friday against Wood County Christian with the girls getting underway at 6 p.m. and the boys to follow.

The Silver Knights girls open their season tonight at home vs Ritchie County, the Knights should be competitive this season. This will be a good early season test for Tyler. Ritchie is always tough and they have a good returning nucleus. Give them the edge in this one in a close game.

Magnolia girls will open Friday night on the road against Parkersburg Catholic. Catholic has some big guns and will be a contender this year.

However the Blue Eagles may be the top team overall. Look for them to get win number one on Friday.

Hundred girls open on Friday at Union, while the boys are at home on Monday vs Tygerts Valley.

Valley boys return to action on Saturday vs Harman high School, while the Lumberjills travel to Weirton Madonna on Monday night.

Wrestling Action also gets underway this week with Hundred grabblers hitting the mats at John Marshall tonight. Tyler Consolidated hosts several teams on Saturday with a noon start. Magnolia will travel to East Fairmont Saturday for tournament action and Paden City will be in action next Wednesday at the Ritchie Wrestling tournament.

While winter sports is a go starting tonight, it’s just a few weeks until spring sports season begins. So for the first time as far as I can remember we will have overlapping high school sports. How that works out is still to be seen. We could have some athletes playing three sports at one time. Let’s hope it all works out well and the kids get the opportunity to be back on the floor and fields.

WVU men’s basketball team has been a delight to watch this season. They are as good as anyone in the country on a given night.

Huggins has put together a solid group who for the first time in a long time seem to understand their role, with not much conflict or attitude problems. This is a good team who could make a run deep into the tournament and if they get hot could go all the way. They need to make foul shots and tighten up on defense. That’s Huggins job, you can bet he’ll have them ready as the regular season winds down.

We have been highlighting some of the area’s best athletes from the past in our sportsection. This week we have Dennis “Dink” Blatt a Paden City Great from the 70’s. Check it out! Next week we have a big surprise as we highlight another one of Sistersvilles’ greatest.

As things slowly get back to normal around the schools, expect us to have more sports each week. We will cover as many games as we possibly can and give as much coverage as our paper allows.

If you are a coach or A.D. you can email your stats to us or call them in to us. email to rrutherford@tylerstarnews.com rloy@tylerstarnews.com or editor@wetzelchronicle.com or call 304-652-4141 or 304-455-3300.

We wish each and every one of our local athletes a successful and injury free season. Good luck to all!
