Lady Pilots Defeats Big Reds in Home Opener, 56-47

Three River Pilots scored in double figures to help their team defeat Bellaire 56-47 inside the RL Potts Gymnasium Dec. 5.

The Pilots raced out to a 11-6 lead only to see the Big Reds knot things up at 13-13 with a Jayden Lowe basket from beyond the arc at the buzzer in the opening stanza.

Piatt opened the second stanza scoring with a rebound put-back, but the Big Reds answered with a deuce. Knight tallied 1-2 from the free throw line, but the Big Reds Allie Ault went coast-to-coast to take a 17-16 lead.

Knight and Harlan both added baskets, before Lowe tickled the twine from beyond the arch to knot the game at 20-20. However, the Pilots Knight put back a miss and Harlan scored back-to-back baskets to push the Pilots lead to 26-20 that forced a Big Red time-out.

After the short break, the Big Reds scored a three-ball, but Harlan for the third time in the game grabbed a Big Red miss and went coast-to-coast. Bellaire scored once again on an inbound pass under their bucket with 3:12 left in the third period, that got River Head Coach Rick Isaly to call a time-out.

After the break, the Pilots Knight, Raper and Emily Smith ended the third period to take a 34-25 advantage heading into the the locker room.

The Pilots Hannah Raper pick-pocketed a Big Red player at mid-court and took it to the hoop for a conventional three point play to open the third period scoring.

Bellaire followed with a triple and a deuce to take the lead, however the Pilots Kylie Piatt lofted a three-ball of her own to retake the lead. Bellaire scored a long triple of their own off the glass to retake the lead.

Rylee Knight scored two of her team-high 18-points, but the Big Reds Bethany Bonar scored two of her 9-points. However, the Pilots freshman point guard Kelsey Harlan got help from Raper to score two of her 10-points on a nice give and go.

The Big Reds scored 5-straight points before Piatt swished a pair of freebies and called a time-out with 1:08 left in the half, and went on to take a 34-25 advantage at the break.

Bellaire opened the second half with a deuce, but the Lady Pilots would push their lead to double-digits on a nice drive by Raper that forced the Big Reds to call a time-out with 4:34 showing left in the third period.

Neither team scored much the rest of the period, however, another nice give and go by Raper to Knight was the only points scored by the Pilots, and a deuce and a made free throw were the final points scored by Big Reds, with River up, 48-42 heading into the final 8-minutes of play.

Bellaire scored a deuce to open the fourth period, but Harlan swished a pair from the free throw line and Raper went hard to the basket and scored to force another time-out by the Big Reds at the midway part of the period.

The Pilots Raper to Knight worked for the third time and was the Pilots last points, while the Big Reds netted a deuce and a free throw for the games final points.

Knight recorded a team-high 18-markers, while grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds for a double-double. Piatt followed with 11 points and 7-steals, while Harlan collected 10-points and 8-rebounds. Raper scored 9-points and dished out a game-high 4-assists, while Smith who was perfect from the floor, tallied 6-points, and Tessa Priem tallied a deuce for all the River scoring.

The Big Reds was paced by Jayden Lowe with a game-high 20-points, while Bethany Bonar and Allie Ault netted 8-points.

The Pilots even their record at 1-1 as the lost a heart breaking 1-point loss to Monroe Central in their season opener.
