Blue Eagles Fall in Sectional Semis
Magnolia gave a valient effort on Thursday night at Ritchie County, but the Rebels fought them off in overtime to get a 42-38 win in the Class A Region 1 Section 2 semi-final game.
The Blue Eagles got big baskets from Kyndra Pilant and Lara Ann Smith in the fourth quarter to get the game to O.T., but it wasn’t enough as the Rebels went to the free throw line six times making five in the extra period as they outscored the Blue 7-3 to pick up the win.
Pilant had a big night for Magnolia as she finished her high school career with 17 points and 11 rebounds while also hitting a 3-pointer and getting six steals. Backing her up in double figures was Smith who finished with 12 points, including four from long range.
The first quarter was a draw at 10 each, but the Blue Eagles won quarter two seven to six to take a one point lead into the locker room. The Rebels however, came back strong after the break to gain the lead 27-26 heading into the final eight minutes.
Magnolia drew even in the fourth with a 9-8 advantage, to set the stage for the overtime. Both teams hit a basket in the extra period, but the home team got the win at the free throw line where they hit 11-20 attempts on the night while the Blue Eagles on connected on 4-8. New Martinsville hit 14 field goals including six 3-pointers while the Rebels knocked in 15 with one 3-pointer.
Adding to the Blue Eagles total was Audrey Cross with five markers, Holland Estep with two, and Lenica Grimm with a basket.
The Blue Eagles ended the season at (9-14) while the Rebels who advanced to play St. Marys in the section championship improved to (15-8).
