Magnolia Spoils Hundred’s Senior Night

By Staff | Feb 26, 2020

HUNDRED-The Magnolia Blue Eagles went on a 14-5 run in the third period to break open a close game, and went to spoil the Hundred Hornets Senior Night, 62-42 Feb. 18 inside the Hornets Nest.

It looked like this game was going to be a barn-burner early on, as the Hornets Cody Soles and the Blue Eagles Trevor Williamson traded baskets to open the scoring. However, Soles knocked down a bonus bomb, but the Eagles Jake Gamble matched Soles beauty.

The Eagles Qwailei Turner followed with a nifty 2-pointer off a good looking rebound that had the Blue Eagles sidelines go crazy, followed by teammate Jake Gamble’s rocket from beyond the arch. But, while Eagles were to busy celebrating, the Hornets Martin Baker quickly finished off a fast break for Hundred to even things as 7-7.

A short time later the Hornets Aaron Stephens and the Eagles Williamson traded free throws, but Gamble closed out the first period with a rip-roaring 3-pointer to give Magnolia a 11-8 lead after eight minutes of exciting basketball.

Turner opened the second stanza with a dazzling open court deuce, while Williamson launched a rainbow over an out-stretched Hornet defender for his second 3-pointer of the game followed by a Gavin Postlewait charity toss. But, afterwards Soles netted a short jumper, and Hundred would call a quick time-out.

After the break, Williamson scored inside in between a Logan Norris deuce and a Soles triple. Magnolia went on a 8-0 run, but Soles ended the period with five straight points, including his third triple to end the first half of non-stop action.

Turner opened the second half with a two-handed slam, but the basket would not count as an illegal pick was called. But, afterwards Turner scored a pair of sack-and-bake 2-pointers, along with another Postlewait 2-pointer to push their advantage to double-digits that forced a Hundred time-out just 3-minutes into the second half.

Magnolia followed with two more baskets, before Aaron Stephens scored the Hornets first point on a free throw at 2:40 on the clock. Postlewait scored two more baskets in between a pair of Logan Norris 2-pointers to push the Big Blue advantage to 41-25 after three periods of play.

After a pair of Turner missed free throws, Norris double-clutched and scored a pretty lay-in, but Gamble would score back-to-back drives, followed by a free throw. Norris, added a conventional 3-point play, before Turner heaved a full court pass to hustling Gamble to push their advantage to 48-30.

Hundred wasn’t going down easily, as Eli Geho kissed one in off the glass, while Soles drilled his 4th three pointer of the game. However, that would be as close as the Hornets would get as Williamson scored half their last 14-points, while Hundred added deuces by Billy Lemasters, Norris and Soles to end the game.

Turner paced the Blue Eagles with 17-points, while Williamson followed with 15-points, including a pair of long range bonus bombs. Postlewait and Gamble each scored 13-points, with Gamble knocking down a pair of 3-point baskets. Both Glover and Levi Cecil each scored 3-points, with Glover’s coming from down-town.

Soles led all-scorers with a game-high 21-points, including four baskets from beyond the arch, while hauling in 6-rebounds, 3-assists and 1-blocking a shot. Norris was the only other Hornet to score in double-figures, tallied 13-points, while collecting 5-rebounds, 3-assists, and 3-steals.

In addition, Geho, Lemasters, Baker and Aaron Stephens each netted 2-points.
