Eagles’ Trio Earn AOW
The Wetzel County Athlete of the Week goes to a trio of Magnolia senior athletes in Magnolia’s Volleyball players Zoey Jenkins and Kayna Anderson as well as the Blue Eagles Mikey Hamrick in football.
Playing on the Blue Eagles Volleyball team is not an easy task, after all they are the defending state champions and play one of the toughest schedules year-in-and-year-out.
Both Jenkins and Anderrson have been a couple steady performer for Magnolia the past couple years and spends the majority of their time on the court. They both players MHS Head Coach Pam Chapman can count on to get to those loose balls and make a play to keep a rallies alive.
During recent volleyball matches Zoey and Kayna had stepped up their game by filling the stat sheet. In last weeks match up on the road against a tough Weirton Madonna squad Zoey had 15 points, three aces, and 10 digs, while Kayna provided 31-digs and 12-points, with 3-aces as the Blue Eagles took the match in winning 3-4 sets.
In the match-up with Ohio power Fort Frye, Mikey Hamrick had a beast of a second half against the undefeated Cadets. He led the Eagles with 34-yards rushing on 7-carries. He also caught his only pass of his career for 8-yards, while being used some in the back-field as well as on the line on offense, as a lead blocker.
Defensively, is where he was on fire as he made a dozen tackles all in the second half, including 4-sacks, and at one point made 8-straight tackles.
He was also given a standing ovation by not only the Magnolia fans but, also the entire Fort Frye fans and players as he left Alumni Field for the last time.
Only high schools from Hundred, Magnolia, Paden City, River and Valley can win the Athlete of the Week, and can only win once, except during a tournament or the playoffs.
