The first annual Wetzel County Girls Junior High Basketball Championship Tournament will be held on Thursday, February 6, at the New Martinsville School Gymnasium. All four Wetzel County Middle School teams will participate with the first game beginning at 6 p.m. followed by the second game at 7:30.

On Saturday, February 8, the consolation game will begin at 1 p.m. with the championship matchup taking place at 2:30 p.m. New Martinsville School under the direction of Athletic Director Justin Cochran will host the initial event. Teams and coaches are New Martinsville, Jeremy Blain; Paden City, Kelly Sine; Shortline, Tony Rine; and Long Drain, Jason Morgan.

The tournament has received full support from the Wetzel County Board of Education and Superintendent Ed Toman, plus all the schools athletic directors and coaches. A traveling trophy sponsored by Wayside Furniture will be awarded to the champion.

“It took a team effort to pull this off. It’s been two years in the making and we’re finally glad to see it full go,” said Coach Kelly Sine. Sine said three man officials will be used compared to the two man crews used during the season.

“This will be an awesome tradition for all middle school athletes in Wetzel County. It was exciting to talk with the coaches and hear the excitement in their voices,” said Mr. Toman.
