Spotlight: Brad Baker
The Wetzel Chronicle Spotlight Athlete of the week for August 14, 2019, is Paden City senior Brad Baker. Baker is a 5’10” 185 pound center and defensive end for the Wildcats. He has also been a member of the Wildcat baseball team the past two season as the starting left fielder.
Paden City football coach Zach Heasley had this to say about Baker. “We really like Brad, he is one of those kids who leads by example and is a veteran on the team who we trust. He is fundamentally sound and does everything you ask him to do and he does it in the right way.”
Baker as been playing ball for the Wildcats since his freshman season in one sport or another and has really matured into a nice player. His natural athletic abillity and toughness make him a good fit for the Wildcats this season and we look for him and a couple others to help the younger kids learn the ropes. In baseball this season he helped the Cat’s make it to the OVAC tournament and was a steady player for coach Croasmuns club. He is an honor student at Paden City High and will look to make this season one to remember.
“Brad is the leader of the offensive line, and if any kid on the line has questions, they can come to him for answers. He is smart on the field, and in the classroom. One of the first things I noticed from him right away on the field, was how explosive and strong he was on defense,’ said coach Heasley. “He plays defensive end for us, and his get off is incredible.”
Brad is an all around good athlete who comes from a good family. We believe if Baker has a good year and stays healthy the Wildcats will also have a good year. From what we have seen he is a team player who cares more about winning than self accolades. Coaches have told us he has spent a lot of time conditioning over the summer and has put on some weight and built muscle to go with it.
The Cats have a new coach for the first time in 20 years, but Baker seems to have made a big impression on Coach Heasley and his staff. “We have a couple scrimmage games coming up and we’ll be expecting Brad to step up his leadership role and become the player we know he is,” said Heasley.
Friday night lights kick off in just a little over two weeks and the Cat’s will open up on the road with Frontier, Ohio, August 30, and will be at home on September 6, at 7 p.m. come out and watch the game and get a look at Baker as he leades the Wildcats in the home opener.
