Spotlight: Michael Johnson

By Staff | Jul 31, 2019

River’s Michael Johnson is in this week’s Sports Spotlight.

This weeks area spot-light athlete is the River Pilots Michael Johnson. Michael plays multiple sports and plays them very well. Michael can and will wear multiple hats for the Pilots football team on offense. Besides being named a Player Of The Week, he is one slippery hombre to take down, as his speed and quickness leaves opposing team defenders scratching their heads in trying to tackle him.

On defense his speed and quickness keeps opposing teams from running and throwing his way.

He is also the point guard for the boys basketball team, and just like football he runs circles around his defenders. He is a team player that doesn’t care who gets the credit, he just wants to win and will do anything to get the job done. He is a scorer when he is needed as well as a giver in getting assists to his teammates, and of course you have to play defense when you play for Head Coach Mark Romick, and he does it very well.

The Sports staff at the Wetzel Chronicle asked Michael some questions for people can get to know him a little better and below is what he answered.

What expectations do you have of yourself as a player, and what do you expect from your coach?

Just to play how I know I’m supposed to play. Just for him to trust me and let me do my thing.

What have you learned about teamwork from being on the team? We’ve played a lot of food teams through the years. It takes everyone working as for the same thing to get where you wanna go.

How does the team make you a better player? They do there jobs and that helps me do mine.

What foods do you have to give up when you’re in training? I kinda have to eat everything in front of me.

What words of advice or encouragement do they have to share with younger athletes? Just go out and do your thing.

What coaches, teacher or other people have been great influences in your life and why or how? My parents. They just showed me the uneasy parts of life and made me see I don’t want them to see that part of life again.

What one word or phrase do you want people to associate with your name? I just wanna win.

What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player in the sport(s) you play? I’m quick and I think my sports IQ is very good.

I don’t really see any weaknesses

What do the coaches/parents/other adults do that makes sports more enjoyable for you? They just let me be me.

What do the coaches/parents/other adults do that makes sports more stressful and less enjoyable? I’m not a big talker so when people try to talk to me it isn’t very enjoyable.

In the bus ride home after the game do you like to talk about the game, or would you rather wait till later or the next day? I don’t take much at all. But I don’t really talk ab sports outside of practices or games.

What are your goals for your team next season in both basketball and track, and how do you plan on achieving your team goals? We’ve had some successful teams through the years. And I wanna be on successful team so just win. Everybody just needs to keep working.

What is something about you that most people don’t know? I watch a lot of YouTube on conspiracy theories.

What would you like to see, sports wise at your school that you don’t have already? An E-Sports team.

If you could change a rule or school policy, what would it be and why? I would reduce the school hours. Because I get tired of being there after awhile and I think the hours could be cut down to a shorter amount of time.

Who is your favorite collegiate or professional sports hero? Sean Taylor or Deion Sanders
