River Holds Annual Turner Memorial Tourney

By Staff | Jul 23, 2019

A trio of Valley Lumberjills participate during match action of the annual Jim Turner Memorial Volleyball Tournament at River High School in Hannibal.

A lot of good high school volleyball was played on Saturday, July 20, 2019, at River high school, with play beginning at 8 a.m. on both floors and 15 teams taking part in the tournament.

Morning play saw Tyler Consolidated, Paden City, Valley and River all fall into the loser’s bracket with first round losses. Action continued into late afternoon with each team getting plenty of playing time.

Coach Summers squad is rebuilding, but the Knights had some good moments despite playing without a couple regulars. Valley Coach Gary Partridge had 12 players split into two teams for the tournament giving all 12 players plenty of time on the court. The Wildcats used their B team as Coach Jennifer Yeater had her varsity in Morgantown sharpening their skills. River also had two teams taking part.

It’s good to see the local teams putting in time on the court as the season is approaching. That’s what it takes to get better individually and as a team. Competition is going to be tough locally, so get ready to see some

good volleyball.

Teams participating in the spikeout were teams from; Shadyside, Tyler Consolidated, River A and B, Valley A and B, Frontier A and B, Beallsville, Bridgeport, Paden City, Union Local, Bellaire, Barnesville and St. Johns.
