Ritchie Silences Big Blue Bats
The Ritchie County Rebels’ Brianna Jones knocked in the winning run in the eighth inning to beat Magnolia, 2-1, in the Region I, Section II Sectional May 2 in Ellensboro in the double-elimination softball tournament.
The Eagles’ Ashley Tharp and the Rebels were locked together in a pitchers’ duel, but it was Magnolia’s Ashlyn Piekarski that drilled a solo-home-run in the fourth inning to give the Big Blue a 1-0 lead.
However, the Rebels knotted things up at one in the sixth on a pair of base-hits non as important as the RBI single by their star pitcher Chloe Elliott to send the game into extra innings.
The weather started to get bad, and the hosts had a chance to get the win earlier, but the Magnolia infield worked some magic on a pair of busted plays to get out of a pair of jams.
Elliott sat the Blue Eagles bats down in order in four of the eight innings and three of the last four innings. The Eagles Piekarski led of the seventh with a single, but a strike-out and two well-hit fly-ball outs ended the seventh without a score.
Elliott struck-out the side in the top of the eighth, before lightning struck from the Ritchie bats to get the hard-fought victory.
Tharp was on the money most of the game for Magnolia, she struck-out nine and walked one, while inducing nine ground-ball outs took the loss from
Piekarski did most of the damage at the plate, singled and drilled a long home-run to the deepest part of the field. Paige Brill and Ashley Kelly got the other two-hits for Magnolia.
