Lax Second Half Dooms Hornets Against Meadow Bridge
The Hundred Hornets raced out to a commanding 35-18 first-half lead, but the Meadow Bridge Wildcats wouldn’t go down without a fight and outscored the Hornets, 43-21, in the second half to beat Hundred, 61-56, in boys WVHIT action on Feb. 2. inside Meadow Bridge Gymnasium.
Cody Soles scored 17 points while adding eight rebounds. He also made two steals, blocked a shot and delivered the only Hundred assist to lead the Hornets. Logan Norris and Travis McCoy each tacked on 14 markers, with McCoy adding 14 rebounds for a double-double.
In addition, Aaron Stephens tallied nine points and swatted one away, while Andrew Zedell posted two points and grabbed four rebounds.
Meadow Bridge was paced by Jared Gladwell with a game-high 24 points, while Kobe Rozell and Dillon Stephens each scored 10 points for all the Wildcats’ scoring.
The Wildcats won it at the line as they were 20-26, while the Hornets could only knock-down 8-16 freebies at the free throw line. It was also the second game that Hundred Head Coach Virgil Wilkins couldn’t be present as he is recovering from a serious illness.
Hundred On A Roll, Nips Beallsville 72-69
Travis McCoy, Cody Soles and Andrew Zedell each had double-doubles to help lead the Hundred Hornets to a thrilling 72-69 victory over the Beallsville Blue Devils. The boys basketball action happened Jan. 29 inside a well-packed Hornets Nest.
Both teams started out a little rusty, but when they got started, these two high school teams played inspired basketball the rest of the way. McCoy led the way offensively as he lit up the first-quarter scoreboard with seven points for the Hornets, while Adam Barker did the same for the Blue Devils. When it was all said and done, the Hornets were on top, 17-16, after eight minutes of play.
The Hornets came out firing on all cylinders, outscoring Beallsville, 22-13, to take control, 39-29, at the break. Once again, McCoy led the way offensively for Hundred.
The undersized Devils couldn’t hold back the Hornets’ 6-5 center, as he scored 11 points, while point guard Logan Norris chipped in with a deuce and a triple to lead Hundred in the second stanza. Meanwhile, the Devils’ Dakota Phillips started to heat up and tallied six of his team’s 13 points to keep the game close.
Beallsville came out firing in the third, outscoring the hosts, 20-13, to pull to within three 52-49, heading into the fourth period. Three Devils scored all 20 of the team’s points. Meanwhile, McCoy helped the Hornets keep the lead and scored seven of the team’s 13 markers.
In the fourth period the Hornets scored 12-13 free throws. Soles and Aaron Stephens each netted 4-4 freebies, and Zedell netted 2-2 to lead the way in the hard-fought Hornet victory.
Phillips kept the Devils close with a pair of 3-pointers, while Kollin Ludewig sank seven points – including a 3-pointer.
McCoy powered the Hornets with a double-double, 29 points and 21 rebounds, while Zedell and Soles compiled double-double’s with 13 points and 15 rebounds, and 11 points and 10 rebounds, respectively, to lead the 7-6 Hundred Hornets. Norris sank 11 points, that included the 3-pointer for the Hornets.
In addition, Aaron Stephens was two points shy of a double-double and dished out 10 assists.
