From My View For Oct. 3

By Staff | Oct 3, 2018

We just finished selecting the area’s top 25 athletes of all time, as well as the top five coaches. I’m telling you, we believe in the ones we selected.

I want everyone to understand we didn’t use any information concerning what some of these athletes did outside of high school. Also, we only selected those who were nominated by are readers, with the information you gave us. So, if you see there were those who should have been nominated, I’m sorry, but you should have nominated them.

I’m sure there are those who are not going to be happy with who was selected, but we have tried our best to get the best, and that’s all we can do. Anytime you review athletes who you haven’t seen play a sport, it’s hard to judge who is better. Maybe an athlete was on a good team that had great linemen and rushed for big yardage. Or, what if a team didn’t do as great, but the running back did well, who do you pick? There are so many factors to weigh and consider. You see where I’m coming from. Or, maybe one team played easier teams and had good numbers, but the team might not have as impressive stats.

I have a good idea of the athletes who I have seen as a sports writer from the past 17 years. Those prior, I have a slight idea, but there is a lot of material to review and factor, not happy trying to do this, but it’s my job, and I’m fine with that.

I just hope everyone can tell the ones who were chosen that they are happy for them.

In another matter, here’s something to consider: Do you see people the way I do? I see people the way you appear when I see you out and about. Do you appear how you feel? A picture or a glance of someone can say a lot. During a game, players coaches, and fans are all watching. Do you roll your eyes when someone talks to you, or do you look at another person when he or she is talking to you? Do you consider the way you react when someone is talking to you? Let’s try it the next several weeks. I will be taking photos like I always do. I hope you are smiling, but if you’re not, I’m sorry.

How about our choices that we make day in and day out? Are we really happy about what choice we have made? Considering sports, the choice you make can be the one that can decide winning or losing. You might block the wrong player, and your teammate gets clobbered.

Winning and losing, I have seen. I can say with pride that I have shaken hands with the opposing teams if I lose or win.

Anyway, we make a lot of choices we must live with. Did I do something differently than I was supposed to do, and get written up – or even fired? My choice to retire and work part time – is that going to be a good or bad choice? I will have to live with it.

There are so many choices we make every day. Think twice before acting. If it’s not the right choice, you are the one who must live with it.

I know you guys know I’m a Christian, and the choices I make might hurt my chances to that Promised Land some day. What about you?

I would like to invite anyone who reads this to the church I attend, the Steelton Church of Christ. We meet every Sunday at 9 a.m. We have Bible study every Wednesday at 7 p.m. I hope you can come, and if you don’t, please find a church that you can make it to.
