Clay-Battelle Puts It To Hundred, 61-0

By Staff | Aug 29, 2018

With losing two of their top players to injuries, and one for the season, the Hundred Hornets had to change their game plan and find a new quarterback and running back against their neighbor Clay-Battelle. Clay-Battelle didn’t show any mercy in routing Hundred, 61-0, Aug. 24 in Blacksville.

The Hornets’ quarterback Logan Norris broke his collar bone on the first play in a scrimmage a week ago and will be lost for the season.

The Hornets also lost their featured back, Skylar Goff, to concussion-like symptoms and had to fill in with what they could.

However, Hundred’s neighbors on the hill took it to the house time and time again, scoring at will. However, the Hornets stood toe-to-toe and had two scoring opportunities, but a long touchdown scamper was called back due to a block in the back, and the other long TD run stepped out of bounds at the four-yard line. But, the game was in the mercy-rule stage and Hundred couldn’t get another play in before the final buzzer.

“My guys never gave up, and they played hard to the very end,” stated head coach Shayne Minor.

“We had several guys step up, and our bench pitched in and we had every one of our players see time.”

Offensively, Andrew Zedell was 6-16 for 69 yards with two interceptions in his first game as a quarterback. He also ran for 90 yards and had one long run called back, or he would have gained over 100 yards on the ground. Four of his passes went to Bryce Bartrug for 56 yards, while Jacob Kuhn and Martin Baker each caught a pass, split 13 yards.

Defensively, the Hornets had four guys with nine tackles in Kuhn, Bartrug, Zedell and Chris Rine, with eight of Kuhn’s tackles being solo stops.

Baker averaged 38 yards per punt.

“I’m proud of each one of my players, and you can all the kids wanted to get in and mix it up that wasn’t there in the past; that’s what a coach wants, players wanting to get in their and mix it up.”

It will not get any easier for the Hornets, as they will face another neighbor in Cameron Friday at 7 p.m. in their first home game in a couple years at the new and still improving Cosgray Field.
