Spotlight: Travis McCoy

By Staff | Jul 25, 2018

Hundred Hornets senior Travis McCoy is a basketball junkie, having been playing since the second grade.

Every once in a while an athlete will find a sport he or she really love, and it’ll become a passion. Hundred High School senior Travis McCoy seems to have found his niche. He loves to play basketball and has been doing so since he was a second grader.

Although he admits basketball may be his sport, it is not McCoy’s only one. He played football his sophomore year, and he was selected to the All-Mason Dixon second team. In addition, he also participates in track and field – shot put and disc, and he is the catcher on the HHS baseball team.

He doesn’t lack for things to do; even in a small town, energetic kids can be active. McCoy stands out among some of the best. He has set goals – not only for his high school career, but for his future after high school and beyond.

His goal for his upcoming senior year is to strive – not only in sports, but also academically -something he has already accomplished. From the start of his freshman year to current, McCoy’s GPA has never fallen below 3.5; as a result, he has been on the school’s honor roll every grading period. His goal after high school is to attend college and receive a degree in Sports Management.

Travis is very sports-minded and hopes to lead Hundred’s sports teams to successful seasons. He hopes his hard work will pay off, and he will catch the attention of a college where he can further his basketball career on a scholarship.

“One of my goals in life, if not the most important, is to become a role model for others – not only in small rural areas, but in all areas where I may reside. I also look forward to being a productive part of society,” said McCoy.

McCoy stands 6’5″ tall and weighs in at 223 pounds, making him a force on the boards and a handful for the opposition. He is hoping to lead the Hornets to a winning season, the first in many years. Last season (2017-18) he averaged a double-double 17.8 points and 13.2 rebounds.

During his time at Hundred High, McCoy has had the honor bestowed upon him, through the high school principal ,of being selected to attend Mountaineer Boys State. While there, the the attendees participated first-hand in the operation of different levels of government through mock demonstrations. In addition, McCoy was chosen by Wetzel County Superintendent Ed Toman to represent Wetzel County Schools in the Jason Argonauts Program’s Bio Blitz, held in Malaysia.

“I spent seven wonderful days in the Penang Hill Rain Forest where I met and worked with scientists from around the world, as well as other students from Malaysia,” added McCoy.

McCoy has received plenty of awards during his first three years at Hundred, and is hoping to add to the list in the new school year. His past accomplishments include the Public Speaking Award, Academic Letterman, Yale of Science and Engineering Award, placed in VEX Robotics competition, placed in Technology Bowl Competition, first place West Liberty Science Fair for Chemistry, first place Pittsburgh Chemistry Society for Analytical Program, Athlete of the Week in November 2017, First Team All-Mason Dixon Basketball, high school basketball team captain junior year, and sports letterman.

McCoy recently played in the summer basketball league against River, Valley and Paden City; he held his own against all three teams and was a force on the boards while knocking in 19, 17 and 17 points. For those who want to see a good basketball player from the Hundred area, don’t miss a home game. McCoy’s a good one. He’s also a very smart person and an unselfish one at that. He does his best to help his team and keep his teammates involved.
