From My View for June 6

By Staff | Jun 6, 2018

The Memorial Day functions held around the Wetzel Chronicle area were amazing and moving, especially across the river at Hannibal.

American Legion Post #760 went a step better than they did last season with a service where more than 100 guests packed the Hannibal Dam site to observe.

A parade featuring retired veterans riding in a huge truck, passing out candy to all the children, was just a sample on what was to come.

After the parade, there was a flag raising, as well as the placement of a Memorial Day wreath. These tokens marked the many men and women who lost their lives, so we can have our freedoms. It’s like the way Jesus died for us, so that we might have everlasting life.

After the wreath placement and the American flag raising, there was the gun salute; the River Pilot Alumni Band played Patriotic tunes that warmed the hearts of those present. Jim Miller, of Post #760, gave a patriotic message that hit the bulls-eye.

Though there was a bit more than 100 in attendance – not counting all the retired veterans, band members, and emergency responders in the parade, it is a shame there were not more present at the Memorial Day festivities. In the Steelton area, just a half-hour earlier, there were possibly 50 individuals present.

I know there were many activities going on throughout the area, but the fine folks who organize these Memorial Day services gave up their previous lives to serve our country. We could have at least made an appearance and acknowledge the effort.

Afterward, American Legion Post #760 offered a free picnic to all that were present, and Ray Sapp and Country Sounds were there to entertain. The Lady Auxiliary of Post #760 put on a nice spread with plenty for all to eat. That ended the day for me.

It is a shame we don’t have more USA citizens show up for Memorial services from around the country, but I do know for the majority of Americans, we are so truly thankful for our veterans – past and present.

Afterward, my wife and I drove around to place flowers on graves of my wife’s family and mine, while visiting with many former friends that have passed away, including our beloved Bill Stewart.

I was grateful for all the grave caretakers from Paden City, Sardis, and New Martinsville for the upkeep of the cemeteries throughout. Also, I appreciate all 100s of American flags that were placed on the graves of those who have died who were veterans.

I can guess who buys or puts the flags out, but I would like to know so I can personally thank them for what they do.

Anyway, while observing former WVU coach and New Martinsville resident Bill Stewart’s gravesite, I thought it would be nice if folks could come together to install some sort of memorial near his grave, in his memory.

Many former players, fans and WVU supporters, from all over, could visit. I don’t know much about something like that, but I hope someone cam start this project, and we can get-er-done and “Leave No Doubt,” like Coach Stewart would say.

In closing, thank you to every one that has served and are now serving for our beloved country we call the United States of America.
