Tharp Earns Weekly Honor

There were a few local athletes who had a good week in baseball, softball or track. However, there was one that did more than pretty good – Magnolia junior Ashley Tharp.
Tharp struck-out 19 Tyler Silver Knight batters in a double header to help the Eagles beat Tyler, 8-5 and 5-0, in a double header sweep. She struck-out seven of the last eight Tyler batters in the 5-0 shut-out.
In the two games at the plate, Tharp had a pair of singles and two doubles, while knocking in a run.
The Lady Eagles defeated Fort Frye, 8-0, with Tharp gaining the nod from the mound.
She struck-out nine in the mercy-rule shortened game and had two hits at the plate.
In a 7-5 loss to Toronto, Tharp struck-out 15 from the circle and had a pair of base-hits.
With all this, Tharp was a clear run-away winner for the week.
However, we had plenty of fire-power to go around all over the county. Paden City scored 31 runs on 32 hits in splitting a double header with the Ravenswood Red Devilettes, and there were plenty of girls that did very well.
First there was Katrina Heasley who has been on a tear.
In the two games, she had three singles and a triple, stole a couple bases, and more. Aubrey Neff was also a bright spot as she was only a home run of hitting for the cycle with four RBIs and a steal.
Erin McIntyre had three singles and a pair of doubles, while stealing a base. All of these ladies receive a Special Mention.
Riley Lollathin of River had a pretty good week herself.
In a win over Cameron, she had two hits. In a double header sweep with Fort Frye, Lollithin had three singles, a double, and a three run home-run.
There were many others that played well, including home runs by several players, including VHS freshmen Logan Bassett and Abe Satterfield, as well as MHS freshman Silas McKeever.
The Eagles’ Maddie Winters was also a contender, and she was the only area track representative who hasn’t won this award to win at the Shadyside Relay in the shot put with a throw of 34-1.50.
During the spring sports season, only high school athletes from Hundred, Magnolia, Paden City, River and Valley are eligible to win.
They can only win once per sport during the regular season.
