Brown, Caldwell, and Gamble Are Athletes Of The Week
This week’s Athletes of the Week are River High School’s Cooper Brown and Candace Caldwell, along with Magnolia High School’s Jake Gamble.
The River Pilots’ Cooper Brown won the 100, 200 and 400 meter sprints in the first meet of the young season at Shadyside in the Ohio Valley Track League.
Meanwhile, the Lady Pilots’ Candace Caldwell had a remarkable day Saturday in a double-header win against Tyler Consolidated and Monroe Central. In the two games, Caldwell had eight RBIs on six hits, including a 3-run home-run and a double.
Also earning Athlete of the Week is Magnolia sophomore Jake Gamble. He struck out seven through the first four innings against Tyler (nine for the game) and only allowed two hits from the mound. He helped his own cause with a bases-clearing double, while stealing a base, and making a diving play at short stop to end the game.
The Paden City trio of Ethan Cross, David Joy and Ryan Cross are this week’s Special Honorable Mention. Ethan Cross was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, plated five runs in a win over the Valley Lumberjacks. Joy smacked three singles and knocked in a career-high six runs in a win over Valley. Ryan Cross also had a big night; he drilled a double, while smacking a pair of home-runs, and plated four runs.
Honorable Mention went to Livi Rose of River; she had four hits in a double header victory over Tyler and Monroe Central. She belted a single and a double with two RBIs against Tyler, and doubled and tripled, knocking in three runs in the win over the Lady Seminoles.
During the spring sports season, only high school from Hundred, Magnolia, Paden City, River and Valley are eligible to win. They can only win once per-sport during the regular season.
