Lady Hornets’ Softball is 11 Players Strong
Photo by Bruce Crawford The 2018 Hundred Hornets Softball Team is pictured. In no particular order: Lexi Bragg, Madison Fetty, Savannah Horner, Tori Hawkins, Savannah Bragg, Rachel Hutton, Elizabeth Keller, Kerston Sturm, Kayla Matthews, Emily Matthews and Sarah Keller. Coaches are Roger Tustin and Jamie LeeAnn Snedden.
Entering her first season as the Hundred girls softball coach, Jamie LeeAnn Snedden has six returning letter-winners back from last season, along with a pair of juniors and a trio of ninth graders for a 11-player team.
Jamie is not intimidated at all with only 11 players. She feels all players want to be there; that is half the battle at Hundred.
Returning senior Lexi Bragg will be holding down first base for the fourth straight season and is a coach’s dream. Lexi is a motivator and gets the team fired up; she is a coach on the field, as well as off.
Returning sophomore Madison Fetty is the team’s starting shortstop and is a go-getter once she hits the field. She has nice range and has a good glove that will keep teams from hitting her way.
Returning junior Savannah Horner was the back-up pitcher last year and has worked tirelessly on her game. She looks to be in mid-season form with only one day of practice outside. Her control is a lot better and has a little sting on her fastball, while learning the craft from veteran assistant coach Roger Tustin.
“Coach Tustin is wonderful,” said Horner. “He is very knowledgeable and with him pushing all the right buttons for me; I can’t wait to get on the mound, put my hard-hat on and go to work.”
However, Coach Tustin has an eager returning junior in Tori Hawkins who wants to take in all of his knowledge and help out when Horner isn’t pitching.
“Hawkins has been practicing on her own, and is doing a pretty good job on her own; I can’t wait to help her develop into a pitcher,” said Tustin. Both Horner and Hawkins will play center field when they aren’t pitching.
Returning junior Emily Matthews will hold down the hot corner, while returning sophomore Savannah Bragg will be Horner and Hawkins’ battery-mate behind the plate. She has a great arm and will keep most base runners from trying to steal.
Junior newcomers are Rachel Hutton and Elizabeth Keller. Hutton will play second base, while Keller and freshman Karston Sturm will be battling for the right field spot.
Freshmen Kayla Matthews and Sara Keller will battle for left field starting slot.
With one senior and five juniors on the team, mixing in with a pair of sophomores and a trio of freshmen, makes for a good mixture of young and experienced players. Coaches Snedden and Tustin could possibly see more wins than last season.
Hundred lost six players to graduation in Madeline Goff, Sydney Hoyle, Taylor Fetty, Brittany Tustin, Miranda Gray and Carson Baker – along with coach Chipper Goff. He is now the town’s mayor.
