Knights Put End to ’Jacks Season
The Valley Lumberjacks’ Levi Streets scored a game-high 22 points, including five-long range bonus bombs, but it wasn’t quite enough to get past Wheeling Central, 92-52, in the WVSSAC Class-A Region I, Section I sectional semi-final, played Feb. 27th inside the John Marshall Fieldhouse.
Valley opened with a 5-4 lead to start the game, but Wheeling Central sparked by a 18-2 run, went on to take a 29-15 advantage after one period of play.
The Knights scored four quick points in the second period before the Lumberjacks went on a 9-0 run, thanks to a trio of three point bonus bombs to pull to within 33-24.
However, that would be as close as the Lumberjacks would get as they finished off the second period trailing 52-35. Streets scored 18 of his game-high 22 points, including four baskets from beyond the arch to keep to within striking distance heading into the locker room.
Valley started the second half with Streets hitting a three-ball, and Avery Kinkade scoring two. However, the Knights would shut him down Streets, and go on a 17-4 run to put the nail in the coffin.
Scoring for the Lumberjacks was Streets with 22 points, Kinkade with 10 points, Peyton Bassett scoring nine points, all from beyond the arch.
In addition, Levi Anderson tallied five markers, while Ethan Greathouse netted four points and Tyler Kocher scored two.
Brent Price and Anthony Robbins each scored a team-high 19 points, while Owen Gainer followed with 15 points for all the Central double-digit scorers.
Valley fell to 11-12 on the season and will lose starters Levi Streets, Peyton Bassett, Tyler Kocker and Ethan Greathouse, as well as Caden Palmer to
