Magnolia Places Sixth In WV A Challenge
Magnolia freshman Jason Beisel (126 lbs) placed third, while James Stillwagoner (182 lbs), Kyler Cecil (120 lbs), Gage Adams (138 lbs) and Mikey Hamrick (285 lbs) each placed fourth to help Magnolia place sixth in the very first WV Class A Challenge, held Jan. 26-27 at Ritchie County High School.
After an opening bye, Beisel won major decision 13-3 against Joe Chamber of Ravenswood. He then lost to eventual winner Logan Seldomridge of George Washington, 8-2. After another bye, Beisel beat James Sheets of Clay-Battelle by a fall, and Reese Burnside of Doddridge, 5-4, and won third place with a 17-6 to Colton Williams of Ravenswood.
After a pair of byes, Cecil won, 9-7, over Cody Smith of Ravenswood, before losing by a fall. He then won 11-6 to Eric Crowe of GW, and lost the third place match to Cody Smith, 11-0.
After two straight byes, Adams beat Cody Hunter of Tyler Consolidated, 3-1, and lost to the eventual winner, Alex Cook of Madonna. He then defeated Brennan Boron, 5-1, of St Marys before losing to Austin Dalton of Ritchie in the third place match.
Stillwagoner received two straight byes before winning, 8-6 over Christian Thomas of Wahoma, before losing to the eventual winner Garrett Cook of Madonna. He followed that up pinning Andrew Haddock of Doddridge, before losing to Colton Dorsey of GW, 4-1 in the third place match.
Hamrick set out the first match with a bye, then beat Christian Cain of Wirt with a pin-fall. He lost to Ryan Ekey of Madonna, but turned around and beat Josh Ashcraft of Doddridge. He then won by default to teammate Kyle Waters, and then beat Cody Riley of Buffalo, 3-1, before finishing fourth by a default.
After losing to Hamrick, Waters beat Braden Weaver and lost to Christian Cain, took eighth place.
Brody Cartwright (195 lbs) placed sixth in the Challenge, pinned Shawn Taylor and Sam Taylor of Ravenswood and lost to Hunter Leggett of Ritchie to gain sixth place.
Scott had two byes before losing to Antonio Serenicz of Wahoma; he got three more byes before losing to Ryan Cross of Paden City. Scott then defeated Jared Johnston of Doddridge for seventh place.
After beating Scott, Cross lost a pair to Isaac Brown and Dylan Jenkins of Wirt.
Devin Hawkins (132 lbs) opened with a bye, then beat Stephen Yost of Tyler Consolidated by a pin, before losing to Wyatt Powell of Wirt, the eventual winner of the 132 pound class. Hawkins turned around and defeated teammate Jesse Coulter by a pin, and lost to Gage Smith of Doddridge in the seventh place match, and finished eighth place.
Jack Booth (145 lbs) opened with a bye then defeated Ian Smith of Wirt, 6-5, and lost to Trevor Edenfield. Booth would defeat Sullivan Montgomery of Doddridge, then lost a pair of decisions, finished in eighth place.
After both Chris Wetzel and Carter Pyles lost their opening matches, Wetzel and Pyles hooked up with Wetzel getting a forfeit, but beat Dalton Houser of St Marys with another forfeit, and lost to Dylan Buckland for eighth place.
Magnolia Wins Final Four Matches To Beat Doddridge, 48-36
The Blue Eagles won their last four wrestling matches to pull out a nice victory over the Doddridge Bulldogs, 48-36, in the Blue Eagles Senior Night wrestling match, Jan. 24 inside the MHS Hammer-Dome.
Down a few points against Doddridge, the Blue Eagles used quick pins by Gage Bidwell (182 lbs) who pinned Jessica Perrine, James Stillwagoner (195 lbs) over Jared Johnston and Mikey Hamrick over Josh Ashcraft. Hunter Scott (220 lbs) won his match by forfeit to help seal the deal for the Eagles.
Kyler Cecil (120 lbs) also won by pin over Natasha Cox, as well as Gage Adams (138 lbs) over Carson Sullivan Montgomery, and Jack Booth (145 lbs) over Sullivan Montgomery.
The Eagles’ Trenton Mitchell (152 lbs) and Hunter Scott (220 lbs) both won their matches by forfeit.
Three Late Pins Edge North Marion, 40-39
The Eagles Kayden Jones (106 lbs), Kyler Cecil (120 lbs) and Devin Hawkins (132 lbs) started their match against North Marion with forfeit victories, and lost one match by forfeit and by a pin, and a lost a very close 5-4 decision against Jack Booth (145 lbs).
The Big Blue would lose by a pin-fall and another forfeit, and knew that they would have to win four of their next five matches if they had a chance to win against a very tough North Marion who just man-handled Doddridge earlier.
Zach Ware (170 lbs) was in early trouble, but being senior night, Zach – in his second year of wrestling – dug deep and flip-flopped his attacker and pinned him in 1:10 to get the party started. James Stillwagoner (182 lbs) would match that pin in 1:01, before losing a match at 220 pounds, setting up a winner take all in the final match of the night with Mikey Hamrick (285 lbs) against a huge Isaac Hilfong and pinned him in 1:36 to help the Eagles defeat North Marion, 40-39.
