By Staff | Jan 31, 2018

The River Pilots used a 28-10 second period run to help them claim a 55-43 victory over their cross-river rival Magnolia. The girls basketball action happened Jan. 23 inside the MHS Gymnasium.

The Eagles took a 3-0 lead, but the Pilots’ talented sophomore Alli Long followed with a short jumper. Then the Eagles’ Kennedy Parsons swished one of her own. The game went back and forth the rest of the period with both teams scoring 17 points after one period of play.

The Pilots opened the second period with a Caryson Reynolds deuce and a Lauren Flannery three-pointer, that got the Eagles to call an early timeout, as the Pilots defense caused havoc on the Magnolia players. After the break, Candace Caldwell ripped the cords from the corner for the Pilots, while the Eagles finally sank a deuce for Magnolia by Kyndra Pilant at the six minute mark. Logan Riggs made one of two free throws, while teammate Mady Winters made a conventional three-point play to pull to within a deuce at 24-22 River.

Pilant sat for a good portion of first quarter and second period, and the Lady Pilots took advantage, using their tenacious defense.

Reynolds followed with a two-pointer, while Flannery made one of two freebies. Riley Lollathin then went down chasing a ball in front of the Eagle bench at the halfway point of the period, and never returned.

In came Mikenzie Cieszeski to replace Riley; she dialed long distance with a three-pointer that started a 13-0 run, after back-to-back three pointers by Livi Rose and Flannery.

The Eagles stopped the bleeding with a pair of Lara Ann Smith and Riggs free throws, for their final points of the period. The Pilots finished with back-to-back deuces by Reynolds with the later one coming at the buzzer in the 28-10 second period run. This gave the visitors a 45-27 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Lady Pilots outscored their hosts, 10-8, in both the third and fourth periods to get the win.

Flannery led-all scorers with 23 points, and stuffed the stat sheet with eight assists, seven steals and four rebounds. Reynolds followed with 16 points, nine rebounds and eight steals to lead the Lady Pilots.
