Trio Earns Athlete of Week Honors
Three area athletes have been named the Wetzel Chronicle’s Athletes of the Week – Sophie Palmer of Valley, Kyler Cecil of Magnolia, and the Lady Pilots’ Lauren Flannery.
Palmer knocked down three free throws with 1.2 seconds remaining in the Boggs Roundball Classic in order to give the ‘Jills their first lead, and the game-winner. Palmer led the way with a game-high 22 points. She also sank 7-10 from the line, while getting a double-double with 10 rebounds.
She also made a game-high five steals and dished out four assists.
Cecil (120 lbs) won both his wrestling matches by pin-falls in the Blue Eagles’ bout with Williamstown and St. Marys, and also won a 12-2 in a match with Bellaire.
Flannery scored 25 points, including two three-balls, in limited action in a win over Monroe Central.
Mady Winters (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Kyndra Pilant (16 points, 11 rebounds) paced the Blue Eagles with each getting a double-double, while Pilant added three assists and four steals, earning Special Mention.
The Eagles’ Sierra Walker played a very nice game, scoring nine points and dishing out a game-high five assists to help Magnolia defeat Tyler Consolidated, earning herself an Honorable Mention.
The Lady Hornets’ Emily Metz had a monster game, scoring 14 points – that included a career-high four three point bonus bombs – in a loss to East Richland, also earning a Wetzel Chronicle Honorable Mention..
During the winter season, only high school teams from Hundred, Magnolia, Paden City, River and Valley are eligible to win, and the winners can’t win again until sectionals, as well as OVAC and Mason-Dixon, and H.I.T. Tournament.
