Magnolia Falls Against Bellaire, 42-34

After Kayden Jones (106 lbs) won his bout by forfeit, the Big Reds got a freebie with a forfeit at (113 lbs). Kyler Cecil (120 lbs) defeated Jake Stolz, 12-2 to get the party started with his win, but it wasn’t quite enough as the Bellaire Big Reds – the number one leader in the OVAC Class-AAA – defeated the Number Two seed Magnolia, 42-34, in high school wrestling Jan. 11 inside the MHS Gymnasium in a dual match.The Eagles saw Gage Adams (138 lbs) pick-up a win by forfeit, while the Eagles gave the Big Reds a win in the 160 lbs. However, the Eagles saw wins by Jack Booth (145 lbs) vs Brett Berberich, James Stillwagner (182 lbs) over Drew Tingler and Mikey Hamrick (285) vs Joseph Hoephner all with pinfalls.However, Devin Hawkins (132 lbs) lost a close decision by the score of 8-4 to Gunner Kernick, while Eagle teammate Hunter Scott (220 lbs) also lost a close 6-4 decision to Kodi Rines.The young Blue Eagle grapplers Allen Collins (126 lbs), Carter Pyles (152 lbs), Zach Ware (170 lbs) and Brody Cartwright (195 lbs) each lost their bout by pinfalls.The Eagles are currently in second place in the OVAC in Class-AAA and will learn from these matches against the Big Reds when they tangle with the OVAC best in all five classes in the annual OVAC Rudy Mumley Wrestling Tournament Thursday through Saturday at Wheeling’s Wes-Banco Arena.


Blue Eagles Lose 42-41 To Blue Devils

The Eagles’ Kyler Cecil (120 lbs) and Gage Adams (138 lbs) each defeated their opponents, while winning five matches by forfeits and losing two by forfeits. However, it wasn’t enough to get by St. Marys, 42-41, Jan. 6 in a trianguler match that included Williamstown.

Cecil also won his match against the Yellowjackets’ Bryn Curry by a pinfall. The MHS teams did win matches at 182, 195, 220, and 285 lbs. by forfeits and fell a little short to the Yellowjackets, 48-30. In the St. Marys match, Cecil took care of Whyatt McKinney rather quickly in 1:04, while Adams won 20-5 over Jaden Hawkins. Magnolia lost by forfeits in the 113 and the 160 lbs matches.

Besides the Cecil and Adams wins against the Blue Devils, the Eagles’ Sam Zombotti (126 lbs), Woodson Londown (170 lbs), James Stillwagner (182 lbs), Brody Cartwright (195 lbs) and Mikey Hamrick (285 lbs) all won their matches by forfeits, while Devin Hawkins (132 lbs), Trenton Mitchell (145 lbs), Carter Pyles (152 lbs) and Hunter Scott (220 lbs) all lost by pinfalls.


Williamstown 48, Magnolia 30

Besides the Cecil win against Williamstown, the Eagles’ Hunter Scott (220 lbs) defeated Nick Bower by a pinfall, while the team picked up forfeits by Stillwagner, Cartwright and Hamrick. There was a double-forfeit in the 160 lb class, and the Eagles also forfeited a match in the 113 lb weight class.

Magnolia’s Jesse Coulter (132 lbs), Jones, Hawkins, Adams, Mitchell, Pyles and London each lost their bouts by pinfalls.

With all these matches this week, the Eagles will look to soar in the OVAC Wrestling Tournament at WesBanco Arena Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
