After losing its first two sets to the River Pilots, the Paden City Wildcats would run the table in the following three sets to win a hard-fought match on Oct. 5 at RL Potts Gymnasium. The night also served as Cancer Awareness night.

In the first set, there were four lead changes, including 21-21; however the Lady Pilots’ Allison Bennett put on a serving clinic as she scored the final three points on service aces to give the hosts a 25-21 victory. River served up nine service aces, while the Lady ‘Cats only made one.

In the second set, there was 14 lead changes, with the later one at 26-26. After River broke serve at 26, the Pilots’ Macey Ladyga served up the last two service points to capture set two.

Knowing their backs were to wall, Paden City girls knew they had to win the next two sets to send the match to an extra period.

In the first set, the two teams went back and forth until it was tied up at 4-4. The Paden City homecoming queen, Kameron McClain, then served up four straight points, before each team served up a point and then they would brake serve until the set was 11-8 on an ace by the Pilots’ Lauren Flannery.

After a service fault the ‘Cats held a 12-8 lead, and that’s when Aubrey Neff served up two straight points, until the Pilots Katie Straub belted a kill to break serve.

It goes without saying, once you make a great play, you get the serve and that is what happened. Straub and company scored the next four points, including another ace by Straub to close the gap to 14-12.

One of the ‘Cats freshman phenom – Mallory Yeater – broke the Pilots’ serve with a kill, bringing McClain back to the service line. She served up four points, with the help of an ace and a pair of Jenna Ferrebee kills, before giving back the serve with a fault.

Bennett served up two points, before Katrina Heasley broke serve with a kill. Malayna Price served up a pair of points with the other freshman phenom – Hope Weber – belting one of her game-high 21 kills.

After breaking serve, Weber again belted a kill to give service to Yeater. Yeater served up two points, that included an ace.

After breaking serve, the Pilots’ Lacey Cordery served up a point, but gave the ball back to Paden City on a service fault.

Needing only one point for the win, Heasley delivered an ace to give the visitors a 25-18 win.

In set four, Paden City rode the arms of Weber, Ferrebee and Heasley as the three combined 13-kills, to win 25-18 setting up the deciding fifth set.

Straub served up the set’s first point on a nasty kill by Sapp, but Ferrebee returned the favor with a kill of her own to win the service to Neff. Neff served up two points that was helped by a Yeater kill.

After each team broke each others serve, Heasley drilled a cross court kill before the Pilots broke serve again on a Ladyga kill.

Yeater returned the fasvor with a kill of her own, and won the serve. Yeater would knock down three straight service aces, and Heasley again went cross court with another kill that gave the visitors a 11-5 lead.

Weber would then break serve, and Heasley would add a service point before the Pilots broke serve at 13-7. However, a Neff dink and a Ferrebee kill would give Paden City a 15-7 victory, and the match.

For the disappointed River Pilots, Bennett tallied 12 points, including five service aces, while dishing out 32 assists to pace the Pilots. Straub and Flannery evenly split 18 markers, including a pair of service aces, 10 kills and four blocks, while Sapp posted eight points, two aces, five kills and one dig.

In addition, Cordery netted five points, that included three aces, while Ladyga followed with four points, 12 kills and made two blocks. Megan Dennis scored two aces, five kills and two blocks, while Morgan Mahoney, Candace Caldwell and Halee Schultheis each made a dig.

For the Paden City Wildcats, Yeater scored a game-high 31 points, including two aces, and 19 assists, eight kills and three digs to lead the charge. McClain netted 19 points and compiled 10 digs, while Neff and Price each tacked on 17 points, with Neff adding 20 assists, five kills and five digs, while Price made 20 digs.

In addition, Heasley scored 14 points and made eight kills and five digs, while Weber was one block from a triple double, 21 kills, 10 points and nine blocks. Ferrebee made 12 kills and four blocks, while Jenna Arnett made two sets.
