Pierce, Estep Are Athletes Of The Week
We didn’t have an Athlete of the Week in the May 24 paper, so we are putting in last week’s choices for this week. The Athletes of the Week are Blue Eagle Bailey Estep and the Wildcats’ Jacob Pierce.
Estep won two state track first place medals at the state track meet last week in Charleston in the high jump and the long jump. In the high jump, she cleared 5-4 to set a new state record in Class A, while soaring through the air like Super Girl at 17-02.25.
Estep has set several records this year at Magnolia and at the Bellaire Relays to the OVAC track championships.
Pierce won the 300-meter hurdles on a hot and very humid second day, going away with a time of 40.61 to capture the Wildcats’ only first place of the state meet.
There were others that did great and earned Special Mention, but for Special Mention, Blue Eagle Jordan Delaney fills out the spot. She slipped a spot from last season’s state meet in the 3,200 (11:50.36) and 1,600 (5:27.21) meter run finished second in both.
Delaney had a remarkable season, breaking numerous records, and placing second place was a nice way to finish out what has been a storybook career in track and cross country.
Honorable Mention goes to a pair of Hundred track athletes in Danny Stewart and Katherine Henderson. Stewart was the lone Hundred boys participant, and placed fifth in the high jump with a leap of 5-10. Henderson, the lone Hundred female participant, placed sixth in the long jump at 15-6.
It was a remarkable season where we had a boat-load of area athletes win Player of the Week, and we hope we didn’t leave out anyone who could have won. We also want to encourage coaches to send in statistics. These help us with our decision-making.
