Lumberjacks Beats Paden City, 57-43

The Valley Lumberjacks used a 19-6 second-period run and held off a very stubborn Paden City squad to win, 57-43, on Dec. 29 in Pine Grove.

The Lumberjacks’ Levi Streets scored the game’s first six points, but the Wildcats chipped away with the help of seven Aaron Heasley points to even things up at 10 at the end of period one with a Heasley buzzer-beating three-ball.

Heasley took a nice back-door assist from Hayden Hizer to grab its first lead, however, Dylan Irvin, Ethan Greathouse and Peyton Bassett each recorded baskets to give the ‘Jacks a 116-12 lead.

Streets then pick-pocketed a Wildcat opponent at mid-court and went on a nice 360 move in the paint to score, pushing the lead to 18-12. Irvin sank one from beyond the arch, and Alex Midcap sank the backend of a two-shot foul that increased their advantage to 22-12.

Heasley finally stopped the bleeding with a jumper for the Wildcats, but Midcap again sank the backend of a two-shot foul.

Hizer ripped the cords twice from the charity line, while Midcap finished the half, scoring with a deuce and a long-ball to give the hosts a 29-16 lead at the break.

Paden City’s Matt Saxon launched a three-pointer to open the third period, but Midcap followed up with a deuce for the ‘Jacks.

Heasley sank a pair of mid-range jumpers, before Midcvap again drilled a deuce.

Heasley scored a triple from the corner, and a pair of Hizer free throws closed the gap to 33-28 at the 1:39 mark.

‘However the ‘Jacks Irvin sank a conventional three point play and a three-ball before Hizer closed out the third period with a two-point bucket in the paint.

Midcap pushed the Valley lead back to double-digits with a deuce, but Heasley and Hizer each sank baskets from beyond the arch to close the gap to 41-36 with 5:56 showing on the fourth period clock that forced Valley to take a time-out to talk things over.

After the break, Valley scored three straight baskets before Hizer took one hard to the hole for a deuce. Irvin made a steal at mid-court and rifled the ball to Midcap for an easy bucket. After a pair of missed Valley free throws, Midcap again put up a miss for a bucket.

Heasley scored a quick two-pointer, and Paden City called time-out. After the break, Irvin went coast-to-coast, while Bassett and Midcap each sank baskets off a Street assist.

Hizer tickled the twine from long range to end the game. Heasley and Hizer scored 26 and 14 points, respectively, scoreing 40 of the Wildcats, 43 points, with Saxon adding a three-ball for all the Wildcat scoring. Heasley added seven rebounds and five assists, while Heasley contributed eight rebounds, and Saxson seven rebounds.

For the Lumberjacks, Midcap and Irvin each recorded double-doubles, with Midcap posting a team-high 24 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Irvin contributed 19 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

In addition, Streets added six points and dished out six assists, while Bassett added six points and pulled down six rebounds. Greathouse chipped in a deuce for all the Lumberjack scoring.

Valley will open the new year at home against the very hot Cameron Dragons Jan. 3, while the Wildcats will host Bishop Donahue also on Jan. 3.
