On Saturday, Oct. 8 the Magnolia girls soccer team defeated arch rival, the Tyler Knights in a thrilling 1-0 match.

As their season winds down, the Blue Eagles went to Tyler and played their hearts out. Kelsey Fisher took advantage of Tyler’s keeper being out of the goal and scored with 20 minutes left on the clock in the first half.

At the start of the second half, the Knights were hungry for a goal, but Blue Eagles Goal Keeper Logan Riggs had other ideas, and at the end of the day, the Blue Eagles were able to hold off the Tyler Knights and capture their first win of the season.

With four returning seniors, Magnolia has a young team. They have been plagued with injuries all season and have not dressed their entire team since early September.

MHS newcomer Lydnsay Whiteman has played a key role in Magnolia’s defense. She has played the position of stopper well and has assisted in thwarting numerous attacks at the goal. Sophomores Kameron Melott, Cearia Leek, and Kelsey Fisher have done great things on offense this year and have all scored for the Blue Eagles this season.

Other team members include, Piper Gaines, Kaitlyn Gump, Ashlyn Piekarski, Sierra Walker, Lexie Kernan, Maria Turcios, Alex Berger, Dessie Kernan, Hannah Fluharty, Garylin Fletcher, Taylor Cline, and Gabby Cecil.

The Eagles are coached by Brittany Leek and Abby Delaney.

Magnolia will take the field at Weir High on Tuesday evening in the first round of sectional play against Wheeling Centrals Maroon Knights.
