Paden City Wildcats opened their season on Friday against an unfamiliar opponent as they made the two-and-a-half hour journey to south Symmes Valley, Ohio. The Wildcats found the going a little tough from start to finish as they had to endure the long hot bus ride and then battle 92 degree heat at game time.

The Vikings from Symmes Valley had no pity on the ‘Cats however and made a long trip even longer by sending them home on the short end of a 32-0 game.

Going up 6-0 after one quarter, the Vikings turned the heat up another notch in the second period and put 20 points on the board for a 26-0 halftime lead. The Wildcats stepped up their defense in the second half to holding Symmes Valley to only one score for the final result.

Symmes Valley is a good program that has been a regular in the Ohio playoffs with 15 appearances since 1995. The Wildcats spent most of the game without their defensive leader Rander Amos who left with an injury in the first quarter and didn’t return. Amos charted three tackles before going down for the night.

Although the Wildcats didn’t dent the scoreboard they played hard and defensively had several bright spots. T.J. Weber had a big night and was a force with 10 tackles with two resulting in losses. Coach Croasmun had high praise for his effort. Senior lineman Dalton Schultheis also had a big night as he recorded eight tackles with three behind the line of scrimmage. Landon Smith and Anthony Newman both had seven tackles with Newman causing and recovering a fumble. Marcus Allen had six tackles while Garrett Cross and Brad Baker each had four.

“The Kids played hard, we made a few fundamental mistakes which hurt us, but for a lot of these kids it was their first varsity game, we also were a little banged up. The mental mistakes can be attributed to inexperience, plus we struggled on offense,” said Coach Brent Croasmun. “Their size just overwelmed us especially their 220 pound fullback.”

Paden City was led on offense by Amos with three carries for 34 yards, Aaron Heasley nine carries for 19, Clayton Thomas two carries for three yards. Heasley was 9-22 passing for 74 yards with two interceptions. Wesley Smith hauled in six passes for 54 yards while Mike Shreves caught two for 17 yards.

The Wildcats will be open this week and will return to action on September 9, at Tygarts Valley.
