Redskins Knock Off Pilots in Semi
The No. 3-seeded Caldwell Redskins scored three runs in the top of the sixth to break open a close game to beat No. 2 seed River Pilots, 9-5, in the OVAC Class 2A Baseball semifinal April 25 in Hannibal.
Caldwell wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, scoring two runs in the opening stanza. After a tailor-made groundout, the Redskins walked, followed by an RBI double by Austin Mettler, who scored on a Caleb Heller single. After a fielder’s choice, the Redskins singled, but River right-fielder Brown hit Isaac Curtis on the relay, who tossed a strike to Williams at third to get the final out on a nice defensive play.
In the bottom half, the Pilots scored twice to knot the game. Lukas Isaly reached first base on a Redskins error. He then stole second and scored on a Curtis single. Zac Smith singled and Chase Wichterman reached on a fielder’s choice. Trey Isaly walked, loading the bases and Hunter Dennis ripped a single, scoring Smith, but Wichterman was thrown out at third on a nice defensive relay throw.
Neither team scored in the next two frames, but Caldwell pushed a run across in the fourth, and River answered with a run of the its own in the bottom half. Doty reached on an error and scored on a Clay Jones’ single to make it 3-3.
Caldwell scored twice in the fifth on a Pilot error, a pair of walks, a sacrifice and a single. However, River fought back to tie things up again.
Lukas Isaly reached on an infield single and stole second on a head-first slide. He then sprinted to third on a Curtis single and scored on a Wichterman RBI single. Trey Isaly then singled and Curtis crossed the plate on a Doty single to tie things up at 5-5.
Caldwell took the lead for good in the sixth, when it opened things up on a River error. After a sacrifice bunt, Caldwell had back-to-back singles that scored the go-ahead run before heading into the seventh, where they scored three runs on a bases-loaded double.
Wichterman started for the Pilots and worked four innings. He struck out two and walked one, while Lukas Isaly took the loss in relief, striking out two and waling four.
Trey Isaly walked, singled, doubled and knocked in a run, while Jones singled twice and plated a run. Curtis also singled twice and brought home one while Smith, Hunter Dennis, Jordan Doty and Wichterman each added RBI singles. Lukas Isaly, singled, walked, singled, reached twice on a pair of Redskin errors, stole three bases and scored twice.
River Holds Off Paden City
The River Pilots scored five runs in the first inning and held off a gallant come-back to beat Paden City, 9-7, April 27 in Hannibal.
For the Pilots, Isaac Curtis picked up a win in relief. He struck out one and walked three, while Lukas Isaly got the save.
Zac Smith led the way from the plate, belting three singles, while Clay Jones doubled in three runs.
Doty singled in two runs, while Dennis singled in one run.
Andrew Dennis tossed six innings for the Wildcats, striking out four and walking four in a loss, while Aaron Heasley tossed the sixth. He fanned one and walked one.
At the plate, Luke Cooper singled twice to lead the Wildcats, while Hayden Hizer doubled and knocked in a pair. Heasley added an RBI single.
