Cain, Cosper, Blain Are Lauded
Again this week, we had several outstanding area athletes do well on the diamond and the track. Winning this week is one male thinclad, one softball player and a baseball player.
The Valley Lumberjacks’ Tucker Cain was a clear winner this week. He won the discus, high-jump, long-jump and the pole vault to help the Valley Lumberjacks win their fourth straight Mason-Dixon Conference championship at Clay-Battelle High School.
Taylor Cosper was a clear winner in softball as well. She had five singles and a triple in a double-header against a very tough Bellaire St. John team, and picked up a win in the opener, struck out one. She picked up another win from the circle in a 14-7 victory over Beallsville, striking out six.
In baseball action, the Blue Eagles’ Derrick Blain got the nod over a handful of outstanding baseball players this week. Blain had five hits, including a pair of triples, and a suicide squeeze at the plate in a pair of wins over Paden City and Tyler Consolidated and a loss to Bishop Donahue. He also struck out 12 batters against Tyler Consolidated.
During the spring sports season, players can only win Players of the Week once during the regular season, with athletes from Hundred, Magnolia, Paden City, River and Valley the only teams being recognized.
The student-athletes are selected by the sports staff at Wetzel Chronicle.
