Players Of the Week
Again this week we had a lot of outstanding area athletes do well on the diamond and the track. Winning this week is one female track-runner, two baseball players and one softball athlete.
Gaining her very first victory was the Blue Eagles’ Gabby Cecil. She defeated Silver Knights’ track star Jahnvi Duncan, 1:18.7 to 1:18.8 in the 400-meter dash in a photo finish to help the Lady Eagles win their second straight WTTL victory.
Magnolia’s Chase Miller had an interesting week. He pounded out two doubles, two singles and knocked in two runs in the win over the Valley Lumberjacks, while added two singles and knocking in a run in the loss to Bishop Donahue.
The Paden City Wildcat second baseman Aaron Heasley also had a productive week at the plate and on the mound. He picked up a win from the mound, striking out two in the win over Bridgeport, and helped his cause with three singles. He belted three more singles and knocked in two RBIs in their win over Valley.
In softball, Madi Taylor of River also had a couple of nice games last week. She had a pair of doubles in the win over Magnolia and knocked home three runs with a double to help the Pilots defeat Paden City, and drilled a pair of RBI singles in the win over Tyler Consolidated.
During the spring sports season, players can only win “Player of the Week” honors once during the regular-season, with athletes from Hundred, Magnolia, Paden City, River and Valley the only teams being recognized. The student athletes are selected by the sports staff at Wetzel Chronicle.
