WJU’s Chapman Named MEC Pitcher of Week
After a pair shutouts and a nine-strikeout performance, Wheeling Jesuit’s Mallory Chapman was named the Mountain East Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week.
Chapman helped the Cardinals (16-10) to a perfect 6-0 week with three sweeps – at Seton Hill, at Urbana and against Fairmont State.
WJU’s sophomore pitcher posted a 3-0 record with a four-hitter and a three-hitter over 22 innings of work and recorded a 0.64 ERA. Chapman struck out 18 hitters and walked only two.
Last Tuesday, the New Martinsville native four-hit the Griffins of Seton Hill in a 5-0 Cardinals victory. She fanned two and did not walk anyone.
The next afternoon, Chapman bettered herself with a three-hitter against MEC member Urbana. The second-year pitcher struck out seven without a free pass in the 2-0 WJU win.
Completing her week, Chapman went eight innings for her third win as WJU came from behind for a 3-2 win in the extra-inning contest. After allowing an earned run in the first and third innings on three hits, Mallory gave up only one hit in the final five frames of work, while she struck out nine and walked two.
On the year, the sophomore has an 8-5 record with a 2.08 ERA over 84.0 innings with 11 complete games and three shutouts. Mallory has 80 strikeouts with only 21 walks.
