RIVER?GIRLS’ BASKETBALL?TEAM

River’s Jensen Caretti scored 13 points and pulled down 14 rebounds, but it wasn’t quite enough for the Pilots to get past the Hiland Hawks, 59-49, in the Eastern Ohio District IV Championship Feb. 28 at Cambridge High School Gymnasium.

The loss also brought the end of a wonderful basketball career at River High School for Caretti.

She helped the Pilots to a 21-5 season, while finishing her career with more than 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

The game was close for the biggest part of the first half, but the Hawks wouldn’t be denied and started to pull away late in the game when the Pilots trimmed the Hawks lead to nine before falling by 10.

The Hawks’ Brittany Miller led all scorers with 21 points, while Kennedy Schlabach tallied 14. Both girls swished four 3-point baskets.

Besides Caretti’s 13 points, Brielle Williams and Lauren Flannery each tacked on a dozen points, while Riley Lollathin sank three baskets. Abby Caldwell netted four points while Bailey Caldwell knocked down two free throws.

Pilots Move On To District Finals, 53-45

The River Pilots and Ohio State-bound Jensen Caretti secured a triple-double – 27 points, 14 rebounds and 11 blocks to help push the River Pilots into the Ohio Division IV championship with a 53-45 victory over Malvern Feb. 24 at Steubenville High School’s Crimson Center.

The Pilots’ swarming defense dominated the tough Malvern squad for three quarters, and led 41-21 heading into the decisive fourth period.

River tallied a free throw to start the fourth period, but the Malvern Hornets used a 17-4 run to climb back in, until Caretti knocked in a back. But the Hornets got to within seven points a few more times till baskets from Bailey Caldwell and Riley Lollathin put the game on ice.
