Four Named Players of Week
Two Wildcats, one Lumberjack and a Blue Eagle were the recent winners of the “Player Of The Week” honor.
The Wildcats’ Aaron Heasley tallied 25 points, including five bonus bombs, to lead Paden City to a 62-52 victory over Union in the second round of the West Virginia Hometown Invitational.
Paden City junior forward Chelsea Baker scored a career-high 20 points, pulled down eight rebounds, and made four steals to lead the Wildcats to a 39-30 victory over the South Harrison Hawks in the girls H.I.T. Action.
The Valley Lumberjacks’ Dylan Irvin scored a game-high 24 points, including the game-winner in an exciting 84-81 overtime thriller over St Marys in the HIT semifinals. He also grabbed 10 rebounds and rejected four shots.
After winning special mention and honorable mention, Magnolia’s Kelsi Chapman tallied 21 points and grabbed six boards to help lead the Blue Eagles to a 65-56 win over the Barnesville Shamrocks in the OVAC Class AAA third place match-up. She later tallied 19 points in a 70-38 win over the Cameron Dragons this past Saturday.
Magnolia’s Mitch Winters is this week’s special mention candidate, contributing a double-double, 19 points and 13 rebounds to help Magnolia beat Monroe Central, 58-43, in the OVAC semifinal, while the Lumberjills’ Madison Arnolds was one point shy of a double-double, hauling in 10 rebounds and blocking three shots in the 51-47 win over the Trinity Warriors to claim honorable mention.
During the winter sports season, players can only be named “Player of the Week” once with Hundred, Magnolia, Paden City, River and Valley the only teams being recognized. Those athletes are selected by the sports staff at the Wetzel Chronicle.
