Trio of Eagles Earns Players of Week
This week’s Players of The Week go to a trio of Magnolia Blue Eagle football players that helped them reach the Super Six finals Saturday.
The first is running back Tyler Anderson. He was the workhorse on the ground, piling up 152 yards on 14 carries in the mud, while teammate Nick Priem scored the Big Blue only two touchdowns to get the win. Priem was hit helmet-to-helmet very hard early in the game, but shook off the cobwebs and finished the game strong.
The third Eagle to get honors this week is senior lineman Joey Ledergerber. Besides opening countless holes for the Eagle running backs, he mustered up 15 tackles, including two for loss of yardage to lead the Big Blue defense.
Special mention also went to a pair of Blue Eagle defensive linemen in Carter “Iceman” Seckman and Paden McConaughey. Seckman ended the night with 14 tackles, nine of which were solos, while adding a quarterback sack. He also made two tackles for loss of yardage and recovered a fumble.
Honorable mention went to a trio of River Pilot basketball players. Lukas Isaly helped the Pilots win their season opener against Frontier, scoring 19 points, that included a pair of bonus bombs. Isaly also stuffed the stat sheet with five steals, five assists and five rebounds.
Jensen Caretti and Brielle Williams each scored in double figures in their first two games of the season. Caretti scored game-highs od 25 and 26 points in wins over Union Local and Bellaire Big Reds, while Williams added 13 and 20 points, respectively.
The Players of the Week are chosen by the sports department at the Wetzel Chronicle. You can only win once in each sport during the season, except during the WVSSAC xplayoffs and up-coming Super Six game.
Schools participating include, Magnolia, River, Hundred, Paden City and Valley high schools.
