Whetsell, River Rumble Past Reedsville

Braden Whetsell scores four times and scampers for a game-high 133-yards to help the River Pilots beat Reedsville Eastern, 60-6 in the home opener Friday night on Martin Flannery Field.

The Pilots scored its opening touch down when Aiden Taylor stripped an Eastern player and Tyce Felton recovered it on the hosts 41 yard line.

Shortly after, River signal caller Joey Flannery connected with sophomore Drew Dietz on a 31-yard touchdown pass for their first of eight touchdowns. Lukas Isaly took a pitch from Flannery and connected with Parker Caretti in the back of the end-zone to extended the Pilot lead to, 8-0.

Flannery completed his next five passes on the Pilots next series, with Whetsell cashing it in with a five yard touch down run to give the hosts a 14-0 lead.

The Pilots defense led by Cody Sakas sacked the Eagles quarterback for a big loss that helped set up the Pilots next score.

With the ball on the their own 37 yard line, Whetsell side-stepped a few Eagle defenders went untouched for the Pilots. Flannery took it in for the conversion run to build the Pilots lead to 22-0.

With the Pilots ready to score again, Reedsville would take advantage with a Flannery 75-yard interception return. Four plays later the Eagles rammed it in on a quarterback keeper for a touchdown.

The Pilots took the ensuing kick and went 57-yards on four plays capped off by a Whetsell 28-yard TD run to go up 30-6 with 2:47 left in the opening half.

The Pilots got the pigskin back and Isaly would haul in a Flannery pass to give the hosts a 38-0 lead after another two-point conversion run by Flannery.

The second half wasn’t any prettier for the Eagles as Whetsell scored on a 32-yard run. Substitutes Hunter Dennis and Dakota Smith scored on 32-yards and 47-yards, respectively, while Aiden Taylor picked up a two-point conversion run for the rest of the Pilots scoring.

Whetsell scored four times, while netting 133 yards on 10 carries to lead the way offensively. Isaly added 34-yards on four carries, while Dennis netted 30-yards and a score. Smith found pay-dirt once on his only carry of 47-yards.

In the air, Flannery was 10-21 for 195-yards. Isaly caught five passes for 85-yards and a TD, while Dietz hauled in one pass for 31-yards and a score. Craig Hupp grabbed two passes for 23-yards, while Caretti, Whetsell and Payton VanCamp each hauled in one pass.

Defensively, Saksa led the way with 10 tackles, five for loss of yardage and had a quarterback sack. Drew Wagnild recorded five tackles, one for a loss of yardage and forced a fumble. Dakota Smith made seven stops, while Taylor dropped four and forced a fumble. Zac Talbot brought down six Eagles, one for loss of yardage and recovered a fumble. Tucker Boggs also dropped six Eagles, with one for loss of yardage and made a quarterback sack. Luke Matusik had five tackles, two for loss and made a pair of quarterback sacks.

In all, the Pilots defense made four quarterback sacks, 13 tackles for loss of yardage and plowed the Eagles quarterback for four sacks. They forced two fumbles and recovered one.

The Pilots return to action Friday night at Shenandoah at 7:30 p.m.
