Three Named Athlete of Week
In the second week of the athlete of the week there were many athletes that could have been selected.
This week’s selection was a special mention last week, Alex Anderson of Magnolia soccer team. Joining him are two River Pilots, volleyball player Jensen Caretti and football player Braden Whetsell.
Anderson scored eight goals last week, four against Oak Glen and four against St. Marys in a 4-1 victory in both matches.
Caretti scored a triple-double, 13 points, 13 kills and 14 blocks to help lift River to a 25-16, 18-25, 25-21 and 25-18 four-set victory in their home opener against Linsly.
Whetsell led the Pilots to a 60-6 victory over Reesville Eastern in its home-opener scoring four touchdowns and rushing for 133-yards.
This weeks Honorable Mention goes to Cheyenne Morris and Tyler Anderson of Tyler Consolidated. Morris was the Knights first female golfer to lead the team with the lowest score, while Anderson rushed for 66-yards on 16 carries and scored a touchdown.
Special mention is going to the entire Magnolia defense, and the ‘Jacks signal caller Trey Streets.
The Eagles “D” shut the door on a potent Shadyside Tiger team that hasn’t lost a regular season game in its last 32 games. In doing so, the Eagles defense limited the Tigers to only four yards rushing, and 104-yards passing.
Street had a monster game for the Lumberjacks and could have easily have been the Player of the Week by himself. Street rushed for 172-yards and two touchdowns, while tossing for 135-yards and one TD pass. He also had an interception on defense.
The Athlete of the Week is given to an area’s top athlete chosen by the sports staff at Wetzel Chronicle and the Tyler Star News. The winners can only claim athlete of the week once in that sport throughout the season.
Schools that will have a chance to win are Magnolia, Tyler Consolidated, Paden City, Hundred, Valley and River High Schools.
