Magnolia Life Achievement To Be Awarded to Seven
Seven former Blue Eagle student-athletes from three decades will be feted at the 30th annual Magnolia Athletic Boosters Life Achievement Awards Banquet.
The public event will be Sunday, July 26 at Magnolia High School. A social starts at 12:30 p.m. followed by a meal at 1 p.m. Tickets will be available at Witschey’s in New Martinsvilleor from banquet chairman Brent Gamble at 304-455-3234.
The honorees, listed by graduation year and hometowns, follow:
John Nally (1967) of Wheeling, W.Va.; David Underwood (1970) of Vienna, W.Va.; Larry Crane (1971) of Nashville, Tenn.; Charles (Chuck) Herrick (1971) of Cordele, Ga.; Dr. David Bridgeman (1973) of Hannibal, Ohio; Aaron Cisar (1992) of New Martinsville; and Mark Cisar (1994) of St. Clairsville, Ohio.
Capsule summaries of the honorees:
Nally-He was a four-year football and track athlete and co-captain of both teams as a senior, In football, he was team Lineman of the Year and earned honorable mention All-OVAC and All-State his final season. As a sophomore, he was a member of the 1964 Class AA state championship squad. He earned two degrees from West Virginia University-a B.S. in pharmacy and a masters in Community Health Education. He worked 41 years for the Ohio Valley Medical Center and East Ohio Regional Hospital in various positions as staff pharmacist, operations manager, assistant director and director of pharmacy.
Underwood-He was a four-year football and baseball player for the Blue Eagles and served as baseball team co-captain as a senior. He graduated from West Virginia U. in political science and earned a law degree from Ohio Northern University. Since 2006, he has been an Advanced Planning Specialist with United Bank in Parkersburg after serving from 1997-2006 as co-owner and Regional Legal Counsel for Title First Agency. He also served from 1985-2006 as City Attorney for the City of Vienna and, from 1982-2003, was a partner in the Cosena, Underwood & Merriman law firm.
Crane-He competed four years in football, three years in basketball and one year in track.
He earned two degrees from Marshall University- a B.S, in Business Administration Marketing and a masters in Business Administration Management. He also was a walk-on freshman football candidate and worked in the Sports Information Office four years. After working with Union Carbide in Asheboro, N.C., he has been self-employed the last 32 years in the Management Consulting industry involving projects in multiple locations in the U.S. and overseas.
Herrick-A four-year Blue Eagle basketball player, he also competed two years in football. He attended West Virginia University for two years before graduating from Western Michigan University with a B.S. in Food Marketing. He also attended the American College of Medical Practice Executives at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. After serving as a co-owner of Herrick’s Supermarket and Assistant Administrator of Wetzel County Hospital in New Martinsville, he has worked in Opelika, Alabama, Logan, W.Va., and Columbus, Ga., prior to his current assignment as Patient Financial Services Director of Crisp Regional Hospital in Cordele, Ga.
Bridgeman-He competed four years in basketball and was a letterman on three straight state tournament teams including the Class AA runnerup squad as a senior. He also completed one year in track and cross country. He graduated from West Liberty State College before earning a dentistry degree from West Virginia University. From 1980-88, he partnered in a dental practice with his father Robert Bridgeman and since 1989 has had a private dental practice in the New Martinsville area.
A. Cisar-He competed in football and baseball for four years and twice earned All-State, All-OVAC and All-Valley in both sports. As a senior, he quarterbacked the 11-2 record team which advanced to the Class AA state semifinals. He attended Mercer University in Macon, Ga., on a baseball scholarship but, after an arm injury, transferred to Fairmont State where he graduated in Technology Education. He also played baseball for two years and was an all-conference shorrtstop. After working five years as a supervisor at Ormet Corp., he has been a production supervisor the last 12 years for PPG/Axiall Corp. and also serves as a substitutre teacher for Wetzel County schools.
M. Cisar-A four-year competitor in football, baseball and basketball, he was twice All-OVAC, All-Valley and All-State in football and baseball and twice selected captain of the All-State and All-Valley football honor rolls. He quarterbacked the Blue Eagles to two state Class AA title games with team records of 13-1 and 12-2. A two-time Kennedy Award winner as state Football Player of the Year, he is inducted into the OVAC Hall of Fame. Awarded a baseball scholarship to Charleston (S.C.) Southern University, he was a four-year starter and three-time all-conference honoree and Big South Conference Player of the Year as a senior. After graduation, he competed from 1998-2003 in the Boston Red Sox minor league organization. He was a teacher/coach at St. John’s High School in Charleston, S.C. before returning to the Ohio Valley as teacher/coach at Union Local High School. He currently teaches at John Marshall and serves as pitching coach at West Liberty University.
