Wildcats Claw Blue Eagles, 17-1
Paden City’s Zach Heasley plated six runs, hit a double and belted a grand slam homer in a 13-run sixth inning to win 17-1 over Magnolia May 8 at George Mullett Complex in New Martinsville.
The Wildcats drew first blood in the third frame, picking up four runs. After a leadoff strike out, the ‘Cats drew two consecutive walks, while Luke Cooper got the party started with an RBI double. Heasley drove one to the fence for a sacrifice fly to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage. Michael Wilcox followed with an RBI double and Issac Hall finished the inning with an RBI double for a 4-0 lead.
Magnolia scored its lone run in the fourth on a Nick Priem groundout and broke up a no hitter when Derrick Blain and Chase Miller hit for singles. In the sixth, Craig Allen and Hayden Hizer were issued walks back-to-back and Levi Meadows laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Allen and Hizer into scoring position.
Luke Cooper knocked in Allen with a single, while Heasley doubled to bring home Hizer and Cooper. Wilcox then knocked in Heasley with a stand-up double. After Kennedy Cain was walked and Kole Elliott was hit by a pitch, Hall knocked in a pair with a single. Allen walked for the second time in the inning and Hizer reached on a Magnolia fielding miscue. Meadows walked to load the bases and Cooper got a pass that brought home a run. Heasley then cleared the bases with a grand-slam homer that ended all the scoring.
For the Blue Eagles, it was the worse loss of the season, with Priem knocking in their only run, while Miller and Blain pounded out their only hits. Brandon Mason tossed two innings and walked five to get the loss. Garrett Price worked two innings, also walking five, while Priem pitched the final inning walking two.
Hall limited Magnolia two a pair of singles and one run to pick up the win from the mound. Hall also sat down eight and walked two get the win. At the plate, Heasley doubled and hit a grand slam, while knocking in seven. Cooper singled and doubled and knocked in three, while Hall singled, doubled and knocked in three.
In addition, Wilcox doubled twice and knocked in two runs, while Hizer singled and scored twice. Meadows got three free passes, scored twice and laid down a sacrifice bunt. Elliott doubled, walked twice and was hit by a pitch. Allen also walked twice and scored twice.
Wheeling Central 7, Magnolia 6
In baseball action May 5, the Magnolia Blue Eagles dropped 7-6 to Wheeling Central, after scoring five runs on one hit in the first frame. Magnolia tacked on a sixth run in the seventh frame, but it was too little too late. Central did all its scoring in the first six innings.
Losing pitcher Chase Miller struck out one and walked six in a complete game. Joe Ledergerber hit two singles, while Tyler Anderson, Garrett Price and Zach Haught each hit for singles.
John Marshall 16, Magnolia 10
The John Marshall Monarchs scored 10 runs in the seventh inning to come from behind in beating the Magnolia Blue Eagles 16-10 in a shootout at New Martinsville May 4.
The Monarchs struck first with a run in the opening frame, but the Eagles touched up JM with two runs in the bottom of the first. Chase Miller opened with a single, stole second and waltzed home on a Tyler Anderson double. Derek Blain scooted Anderson home with an RBI double to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage after one inning of play.
John Marshall tied it up in the second, but the Eagles scored a run in the third when Blain walked, stole second and scored on a ground out to retake the lead at 3-2.
Both teams scored three runs in the fourth. Magnolia scored its runs when Tanner McAdams walked and Joe Ledergerber hit into a fielder’s choice. Shane Mason reached on a Monarch error and Miller singled. Anderson walked to score Ledergerber and Nick Priem knocked in two with a single that gave the Blue a 6-5 lead.
JM tied it up again in the top half of the sixth, but Magnolia scored three times to take a 9-6 advantage when Blain walked, Priem singled and Brandon Mason singled to score both Blain and Priem. Mason would make his way in home when he scored on a Monarch error.
John Marshall then went crazy good scoring 10 runs in the seventh, while the Blue Eagles managed only one run in their last at bat, losing 16-10.
Priem was the hitting star for the Eagles with a double, pair of singles and three RBI. Miller added a pair of singles, while Anderson and Blain each added an RBI double. Brandon Mason knocked in two runs with a single, while Ledergerber singled.
From the mound, Blain struck out six and walked five in six innings of work, while McAdams and Miller finished off the seventh without a walk or strikeout.
